Le Chai Port Minervois at the Capitainerie in Homps is well known for it's excellent choice of local Minervois wines for tasting. If you enjoy wine tasting, this is a fun way to pass the time waiting for your barge trip to begin.
A specialist in Minervois wines is there every Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 12 pm and the program presents the vineyard, its characteristics, tasting of 3 wines representative of the appellation and an introduction to the basics of tasting. Reservations: tariff: €12 / person with a maximum of 12 persons.
There is a rigorous selection process so you will be tasting the best the Minervois has to offer.
For those wanting to know more, from May to September Chai has a "Rendezous with Winemakers" on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and the last Friday of the month from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The local winemakers discussall aspects of the trade and the "secrets of cave" of each!
There are other special events throughout the year. Check the web site below for a schedule.
Due to a tree virus, the French government is going to be removing 42,000 plane trees along the banks of the Canal du Midi so take a barge ride while they are still there. It is an amazing experience as you drift along the peaceful canal under the shade of rows of plane trees on either side of the canal.
There are canal paths on either side and they are used by walkers and bicyclists. It is a peaceful and pleasant way to spend a few hours.
The barge trip takes you through one lock (twice, going and returning) and on a water bridge over a stream. You will see various wildlife, the lock-keeper's house and garden, Roman ruins and lovely scenery. The captain turns the barge at particularly scenic places so people on both sides can get photos. I appreciated that.

Catch a one hour cruise in Homps for a lovely tour of the canal. The tour is in both english and french. Great scenery and lovely breezes, makes for a wonderful journey. The cruise takes you through some of the locks of the canal which is quite interesting. You can buy tickets at the visitors center.
They run in the afternoons. My cruise left at 4:30pm on a Tuesday. It was 10 euros for an adult ticket.
