Homps Things to Do

  • Wine tasting is always fun.

Le Chai Port Minervois at the Capitainerie in Homps is well known for it's excellent choice of local Minervois wines for tasting. If you enjoy wine tasting, this is a fun way to pass the time waiting for your barge trip to begin.A specialist in Minervois wines is there every Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 12 pm and the program presents the...

  • Take a barge trip on the Canal du Midi

Due to a tree virus, the French government is going to be removing 42,000 plane trees along the banks of the Canal du Midi so take a barge ride while they are still there. It is an amazing experience as you drift along the peaceful canal under the shade of rows of plane trees on either side of the canal. There are canal paths on either side and they...

  • Canal-side terrace

If you want to take a barge ride on the Canal du Midi from Homps, this is a great place for lunch either before or after the ride. You pass the restaurant on the barge ride and it's fun to sit and watch the boats go by as you eat beside the canal. If the day is pleasant, you can sit outside and watch the canal boats go slowly by and see people and...

As I mentioned in my hotel tip, Craig and Valerie run this B&B with unbelievable flare. The food is exceptional, and the atmosphere of the patio being right on the canal is just incredible. All the other guests at the hotel and restaurant were so sweet and friendly. The area gets a lot of British tourists that tend to be very outgoing and chatty....

Homps Off The Beaten Path

  • The touristy but beautiful city of...

I thought the city of Carcassone was a cross between "Medieval Times," and "Disneyland." However it was spectacular nonetheless, and I was told afterwards that the best time to visit is at night for dinner. That's when all the tourists, and tour buses have left the building. Photo to come.

  • Amazing Abbey nestled up in the hills

The incredible Abbaye Fontfroide is just about 20 minutes away from Homps. Very beautiful and unusual tourist excursion. The tours are in French only, but the guide was very nice and tracked down a hard copy of the english translation. Very fascinating and worth the trip. Tours run about every 45 minutes and are about 7 euros per person.Nice gift...

  • The Grand City of Narbonne

Visit the city of Narbonne for it's glorious cathedral and marvelous architecture. I was very impressed with Narbonne. It's a large city, but once you get into the old medieval section it is really lovely. Some of the oulying streets remind me of 18th century Paris. There is a market everyday in Narbonne that is held indoors that is quite...
