    Collioure

    by MichaelFalk1969 Written Jul 23, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Collioure (near the Spanish border) is a picture-perfect village with perfect views on the Mediterannean Sea. It features a small harbour, a local beach, romantic villas, a fortress, and has inspired many artists that dedicated paintings to Collioure. Understandably so. The city belongs to the Roussillon province, which was once long disputed between France and Spain.

    Old towers

by dlandt Updated Mar 24, 2005

I think these are old customs towers, not designed for defense against a military threat, but rather designed as a secure place where customs duties could be collected, stored and guarded until transport.

We didn't search out a road to go down here. More than likely if you did, they would be locked up.

    VdC war monument

This small obelisk is dedicted to the local men who fell or served during the World Wars. Although this section of France generally escaped heavy fighting and intense occupation during hte war, it was not wholly immune from either war's effects.

    Roadside Monument

i forgot the name of the person this is dedicated to, but he was a chemist who also pursued some military career. He died in an accidental explosion.

Part of the reason I've put this tip here, is to demonstrate the type of minor historical markers you can see along the side of the road while driving through the back roads of Languedoc-Roussillon. Although they lack flair and promotion, they do not lack interest.

Église de Saint Martí, Ix (Hix - Bourg-Madame)

by tompt Updated Sep 23, 2003

It is one of the best examples of a XII century roman-barroque style church. Built with stones cut in the form of parallelepiped rectangular, the church has nicely decorated windows. With arcs on small columns.
The quiet graveyard around the church makes nice pictures. And if you are not into graveyards, the small village of Hix is worth stopping and taking pics. See the Hix travelogue for more.

    visit a small mountain village

by tompt Written Sep 22, 2003

Just go of the main road and you will reach small villages. In the mountains the churches have some strange towers. It looks like they are still building it.
