Languedoc-Roussillon Off The Beaten Path

  • Church Saint Martin,Limoux

nice big Church I passed on the other side of the river Aude and got this picture. The Church is from the 12C but gone thru many rénovations ,the gothic belltower is from 16C and done on the old romanesque square tower of the 11C , the wooden baldaquin totally scuplture from the 18C , and the modern stained glass gives a contrasting look. The organ...

  • canal du Midi,Castelnaudary

yes the canal passes by here too on its way to the mediterranean and its a great place to walk and have a ride on a boat and just see the wonderful scenery. When I come even alone, this is where I go to spent my time there. All along there are peniches barges moored on the canal a great sight indeed. It is long but this site in French tells you all...

  • the windmills of Castelnaudary

le moulin de Cugarel are a landmark here in cassoulet country, and I go by here as close to family many times; got some photos to show you this beauty and some background on itIt is on the hill of Pech, and the only one restored of the three still in the area.At one time there were 21 in Castelnaudary !This one was built by the 17C;left in abandon...

  • Canal de la Robine, Narbonne

a wonderful waterway and plenty of restos, pubs to live life to the fullest in the Aude dept of languedoc-roussillon.The canal de la Robine is an ancient crossing point of the river Aude in Narbonne. It is a lateral branch to the canal du Midi which is attached administratively. It allows to make the connection between the Aude and the...

  • Collioure

Collioure (near the Spanish border) is a picture-perfect village with perfect views on the Mediterannean Sea. It features a small harbour, a local beach, romantic villas, a fortress, and has inspired many artists that dedicated paintings to Collioure. Understandably so. The city belongs to the Roussillon province, which was once long disputed...

  • Old towers

I think these are old customs towers, not designed for defense against a military threat, but rather designed as a secure place where customs duties could be collected, stored and guarded until transport. We didn't search out a road to go down here. More than likely if you did, they would be locked up.

  • VdC war monument

This small obelisk is dedicted to the local men who fell or served during the World Wars. Although this section of France generally escaped heavy fighting and intense occupation during hte war, it was not wholly immune from either war's effects.

  • Roadside Monument

i forgot the name of the person this is dedicated to, but he was a chemist who also pursued some military career. He died in an accidental explosion.Part of the reason I've put this tip here, is to demonstrate the type of minor historical markers you can see along the side of the road while driving through the back roads of Languedoc-Roussillon....

  • Église de Saint Martí, Ix (Hix -...

It is one of the best examples of a XII century roman-barroque style church. Built with stones cut in the form of parallelepiped rectangular, the church has nicely decorated windows. With arcs on small columns. The quiet graveyard around the church makes nice pictures. And if you are not into graveyards, the small village of Hix is worth stopping...

  • visit a small mountain village

Just go of the main road and you will reach small villages. In the mountains the churches have some strange towers. It looks like they are still building it.
