Things to Do

MICHELSBERG

MICHELSBERG, Bitche

mtncorg Says:  From Hackenberg, the Line goes southwest an the next fort you can visit is the fort at Michelsberg. To tour the fort you need to know the precise times and dates however. Knowing neither, I simply got to visit the entrance – which seemed to be the case for several of the...

LA FERTE

LA FERTE, Bitche

mtncorg Says:  The Petit Ouverage La Ferte was built as one of the nouveaux fronts that made up the Malmedy Bridgehead – a collection of infantry blocks, two petit ouverages and two small gros ouverages that were added late to the Maginot Line to defend the frontier facing the southern end...

GROS OUVERAGE FOUR-A-CHAUX

GROS OUVERAGE FOUR-A-CHAUX, Bitche

mtncorg Says:  Guided tours visit the barracks, powerhouse, main gallery, msueum and one of the six combat blocks – Bloc 2 which houses a twin 75mm gun turret. The fort was manned by just under 600 men and is located just uphill to the east of the town of Lembach. “Four-a-chaux” means...

FORT CASSO/ROHRBACH

FORT CASSO/ROHRBACH, Bitche

mtncorg Says:  Originally planned to be a Gros Ouverage, Fort Casso’s construction was scaled back to that of a Petit Ouverage consisting of two infantry blocks and an entrance block. Casso is an example of one of the nouveaux fronts – new forts that were added to the Line beginning in...

HACKENBERG

HACKENBERG, Bitche

mtncorg Says:  This was the largest of the Maginot forts. Over 1000 men served this fort and there were 19 separate blocks – 7 main artillery blocks and 3 others which maintained machine guns turrets. Terrain dictated that the combat blocks be divided into two separate areas with about 500...

Viewing the Citadel and the Gardens

Viewing the Citadel and the Gardens, Bitche

mallorydm Says:  I recommend it because it's really the only thing to do in the town and the whole point of going to ***e. Touring the Citadel is nice, and it's worth it to see such an awesome site and the history is interesting. For such a large site, there really isn't that much to see....

Explore the Fortress

Explore the Fortress, Bitche

ceby Says:  Admission (at 8 euros per adult) is a bit steep, but if you are a history buff, it is extremely worth it. They will give you comfortable headsets with your admission price that explains the ***e fortress' role in the Franco-Prussian War. I knew very little about that war...

Exploring the Citadel

Exploring the Citadel, Bitche

CrtnShdofGrn Says:  Well, as I said before, don't visit in the winter...there's not so much to see and do. It seems this is the only thing to do there, so until I go back, this is the only activity tip I could come up with. :-) From what I understand, the tour is self-guided with a handheld set...

The meals here were so good that we ate dinner there twice in a row. Not only was the food nice, the service was too (Mr. and Mrs Steffanus run the restaurant). On top of it all, the prices were very friendly!

I've just checked if the restaurant still exists (2007) and yes, it is mentioned on the B I T C H E Regional Tourist Office website.
The restaurant is closed on Monday (all day) and Tuesday evening.

2010: I just saw that the restaurant can be seen on Google. Click here.

Favorite Dish: First night we enjoyed entrecote, sweetbreads, fish soup and probably lots of wine and a dessert. We paid 382 FF total (for 2 persons) which recalculates to € 58 (2007).

Second night we enjoyed some more: foie gras, lobster, champagne sorbet, tournedos, strawberries and icecream and a bottle of riesling. We paid 564 FF total (for 2 persons) which recalculates to € 84 (2007).

Warnings and Dangers

A little honest truth :-)

When I stand up for myself and my beliefs, they call me a b*i*t*c*h.

When I stand up for those I love, they call me a b*i*t*c*h.

When I speak my mind, think my own thoughts or do things my own way, they call me a b*i*t*c*h.

Being a b*i*t*c*h means I won't compromise what's in my heart. It means I live my life MY way. It means I won't allow anyone to step on me. When I refuse to tolerate injustice and speak against it, I am defined as a b*i*t*c*h.

The same thing happens when I take time for myself instead of being everyone's maid, or when I act a little selfish. It means I have the courage and strength to allow myself to be who I truly am and won't become anyone else's idea of what they think I "should" be.

I am outspoken, opinionated and determined.

I want what I want and there is nothing wrong with that! So try to stomp on me, try to douse my inner flame, try to squash every ounce of beauty I hold within me. You won't succeed. And if that makes me a b*i*t*c*h, so be it.

I embrace the title and am proud to bear it.

The citadel of ***e- Not a sight for kids

The citadel of ***e- Not a sight for kids, Bitche

Travelcat96 Says:  The citadelnis nice for history buffs and people that don't mind gory parts in movies. I can assure you though that it is not for small Children and People who do Not like Lots and Lots of Blood. If you are in the citadel, do Watch the films. It's best to leave and go on to...

Maginot Line : Simserhof

Maginot Line : Simserhof, Bitche

mike-tango Says:  You are interested by a visit of one of the Maginot Line fort ? You are right, it is really amazing and interesting, but DO NOT start by the visit of the Simserhof !!!The visit is mainly around a diorama, with music, sound, images effects. You will not be able to walk in the...

Favorite thing: This region has a very nice website in French, German and English.

There are suggestions to visit bunkers where the website in English says "envisage hot clothing", meaning 'dress warmly'!
