I must admit that my visit to condom was mainly because of a leakage problem of the brakes of my car (see my travelogue) but I found that it was not only remarkable because of its funny name. It is indeed a nice and interesting place which always would merit a little detour.
This is not only valid for Condom. I found much later that other places with similar funny names often have some unexpected attractions and are therefore worth a visit not only because of their weird names. A nice example for this is the VT-wide famous village Fùcking. See my page of it.
The problem is sometimes to write a complete page on such a place, simply because of the danger that your contributions could be censored - as it happened to me.

It isn't working yet.
Other than the obvious pain.....the text file if 6800 characters so has to be split into three sections!
The text is losing some formatting.
The intention is that you cu and paste into Notepad, save its as Condom.kml and then open it in Google Earth.
However, you will really want to see the area in order to go through the hassle of stringing the three texts (upper and lower box in Part 1, and upper text in Part 2).
Finally, , the resolution for the Condom area (indeed much of rural France is poor). At least it gives you an indication of how it can be done! (If I can get the formatting sorted out).

Favorite thing:
The Tourist Office in Condom is in the small square just to the east of the cathedral. (Watch for where the cars disappear through the gap...it's there!)
As always, very helpful, always well stacked with brochures and a mine of information on the local area.

A FEW FACTS (from the official website!)
Condom's etymology is Condatomagus and means an old Gallic market.
It is centered in south west France right in the heart or Armagnac. The town is a sous-prefecture (admnistrative center for a third of the Gers deparment) and has 7 500 inhabitants.
The town is located at an altitude of 81 meters with the Base, a Garonne affluent, flowing south to north through Condom.
IMPORTANT REMARK TO THIS LAST SENTENCE: I NEVER THOUGHT THAT CONDOM IS MADE FOR ANYTHING FLOWING THROUGH: IT MUST BE A MISUNDERSTANDING ;-))

To have it when I needed it (en Armagnac, of course)

Favorite thing:
Armagnac is the oldest wine eau-de-vie produced in the South West of the France, in the heart of Gascogny.
It is produced by distilling white wine in an Armagnac still and aged for many years in oak barrels before coming to market.
It comes in blends, or, as is specific to Armagnac, in vintages.
Above all, Armagnac is a craft product, made in small quantities by vine growers and wine merchants who carry on the old methods and techniques.
The diversity of the local soils and grape varieties impart a rich and diverse character on the eau-de-vie, similar to the natural surroundings and craftsmen who make it.
Whilst Armagnac is the oldest French spirit, it was originally consumed for its therapeutic qualities. Some exceptional documents attest to this ... in the archives of the Vatican:
"This water, if taken medically and soberly is said to have 40 virtues... It enlivens the spirit, partaken in moderation, recalls the past to memory, renders men joyous, preserves youth and retards senility..."
Most recent scientific works show that this eau-de-vie
does indeed have therapeutic capacities.
Its properties are due to the wood tannins that it contains following the long ageing process in oak barrels.
Another medical team has also just proved the protective role of Armagnac
in blood platelet clumping.
All these observations tend to prove that moderate consumption of Armagnac
(which is, after all, the best way of savouring it) is in part, along with all the gastronomic products of South West France,
a diet and lifestyle which favours the good health of the region's population, beneficial to one's well-being.
