Regarding the Castle itself, it is over a 1.207 meters high rock called Pog, and the original Cathar fortress of Montségur was entirely pulled down by the victorious royal forces after its capture in 1.244. It was gradually rebuilt and upgraded over the next three centuries by royal forces.
How to reach the Castle: Walking along a steep path and after paying 2,50 € (Oct. ’09). In reality, you have to pay if you want to use the path, otherwise, you can go up but cross-country. After 6 p.m., I think, it’s free.
The Château de Montségur (Montségur Castle) is very famous for the long and bloody history of the Cathars. The Catharism was a religious movement connected with the Knights Templar during the Crusades, which had separated itself from the Catholic Church.
In May of 1.243, Hughes des Arcis began the siege of the Castle that was unsuccessful for months. In March of 1.244, the troops surrendered and 205 cathars (men and women) that didn’t abjure, died at the stake.
It is said that it was the last known residence of the Holy Grail, and according to legend, the Grail, together with some other treasures of the cathars, was smuggled out of the castle by two women during the siege in 1.244 after which it was never seen again.
