The platuea beille has a winter sports station at a height of 1790 meters.

It is located between Tarascon-sur-Ariège and Ax-les-Thermes, close to the Spanish border and Andorra. The ski slopes are between 1650 and 2000 m high. The station is the most important in the Pyrenees for cross-country skiing (ski du fond) walking with snow shoes (raquettes) and husky dog sleigh riding.

There is a ski lift, several cross-country tracks, 1 kid's garden on the slopes, 1 biathlon area, 1 downhill skiing piste for juniors, tracks for the mushers.

There is a restaurant - heated picnic room - equipment renting - shop. Skiing instructors (apx 37 euros for 1-2persons), mountain guides and mushers will accompany you in your Nordic adventures.

It is great during the week, but gets enormously busy at weekends.

There is a twice daily bus service from Toulouse to the ski station. There is also a train station in Tarascon and a bus service to the slopes.

Favorite thing: Tarascon is in the Ariège department in the central Pyrenees just north of the tiny country of Andorra and the Spanish border, located within the region of Midi-Pyrénées. It is the nearest town of any size next to the piste of Platue de Beille.

The tourist information office is located in the town and is open all year (unlike much of the Midi-Pyrénées). It is full of helpful information about skiing and accommodation, and for information about walking, hiking and cycling etc in the summer.

We discovered that nearby Beille is really for ski du fond, walking with raquettes and training with the husky dog sleigh (or having a trip in one). Not for Alpine and snowboarding.

I discovered you can go hiking with Lamas in the summer from this helpful office, so watch this space for information next year.

Fondest memory: Tarascon is on the river Hers and is a charming little town to walk around winter or summer. It has cafe bars, restaurants, boulangeries, and independent shops. And it is about 15 - 20 minutes from the nearest ski du fond pistes.
