Brasserie Firmin: Seafood - Fruits de mer
  • Tip Rating:

  • Brasserie Firmin

Here is the restaurant which at 150 km from the Mediterranean Sea and at 250 km of the Atlantic Ocean proposes seafood of excellent freshness, apparently without passing by Rungis.
The plate of seafood for 1 person at 25 € was abundant.
Nice restaurant with a kind and effective staff speaking also English although the majority of the customers were French. The waitress was very patient when explaining in English the particularities of the sea food dishes to overseas clients.
    Serves also regional specialities.
My only blame is for the relatively high price of local wines.

The advantage of this restaurant consists of the possibility of constituting a plateau of seafood according to one's personal taste.

L'avantage de ce restaurant consiste en la possibilité de constituer soi-même un plateau de fruits de mer en fonction de ses goûts personnels.

    L'Entrecôte: Don't ask "well done"!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • "L'Entrecôte" is the restaurant of a single dish. The waitress does not ask you what you want to eat but if you want the meat "rare" or "medium rare". Don't ask for "well done" this is an offence for the beef.
The meat is good and cut in small strips in a flavourful sauce of butter and aromatic herbs. Plentiful quantity of small size French fries (not bad in taste but not up to the genuine Belgian fries).
    Nice terrace. Efficient service.
At 9 pm there was a queue outside what proves the success of the formula at 16€ with salad.

    -------------------------------------------

  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Teashops are extremely popular in Toulouse and this is one of the more unusual ones, where the mint tea is poured from an elaborate teapot - and from a great height, in the traditonal Berber or Arabic manner.

Pretty little tables and richly cushioned banquets to slump at. The very friendly proprietress will direct you to shelf after shelf of beautiful sticky honey nut and date cakes cast in the prettiest of shapes.

A lovel, friendly place to rest.

The mint tea is great - hot, minty, smokey, sweet

Pizzeria Vecchia.: Cuisine honnête à prix doux.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:

Honest Italian food at soft prices on a terrace (somewhat windy) near the corner of the allées Jean Jaurès and bd. Carnot (less than 100 m from the square Wilson).
Kind and efficient service. The menu is translated in English which is understood by the waitresses.

Large choice of pizzas (oven made) and pasta's.

    Cafe Bibent: Baroque splendour
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a great place for people watching and for swanning about in glamorous surroundings - even if you only have a cafe creme and a beer, as we did.

Fantastic plasterwork confections, great mirrors, marble and extraordinary chandeliers: Fin de Siecle meets Art Deco is how I'd describe the interior.

You have a great view over Place du Capitole: coffee and beer don't cost an arm and a leg; the waiters are charming.

le Florida: watch the world go by
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is not a recommendation for a hidden gem. Le Florida is right smack in the middle of the biggest tourist destination in Toulouse. I went here because I was alone and had nothing to look forward to all evening except returning to a hotel room. I wanted to spend a couple of hours in the middle of things and for this situation the sidewalk tables at le Florida were perfect.

The food, as one comes to expect in this part of France, was incredible, generous and beautifully presented. The slow service meant that I was given plenty of time to enjoy my meal, not leaving until over two hours after I sat down. The patrons were a mix of tourists and Toulousians out on the town. And for entertainment you have all the goings on of the place du Capitole. If you are paying a little more for this meal it's because of the extraordinary location.

    Mayombe: Le Mayombe
  • Tip Rating:
  • In Toulouse when we speak of the Mayombe, it is always to make some the praises.
In ten years " Gaby " original of Congo, knew how to give to his/her/its establishment a certain originality and a reputation of seriousness envied by many.
This connected place very valued by the students is also the most former restaurant African in Toulouse.
The restaurant welcomes you in two rooms, of which a superb cellar, where music will drag you on irresistible rhythms.
Cordial welcome, tradition of quality, and ambiance will incite you to the return...

The Mayombe salad, the accras (the best than I had the opportunity to taste) and the ferocious of lawyer. (dreadfully …bon)
Some flat parmis the best. (my favorites):
Different types of chicken, all as good the some that the other,
Chicken of the chief, chicken lemon (yassa),
Nsusu na buha (chicken smoked to the dough of peanut)
Saka saka (spinaches of over there)
Gambas in gumbos and Muisi Kandas (gambas to the small vegetables)
All dishes are accompanied by rice and banana plantain.
If you come to the Mayombe for the first time, take the menu escape, real gastronomic safari, of the cocktail to the dessert. All included :130 Fr (150 Fr with stopover, Norman hole of Africa)
Menu eyes in eyes for the lovers. (Bruised ye Miso na) 370 Fr for two people all included except wine.
Side goes against, if you are hungry again, of the exotic fruits or ice will know to make you digest….

Emile: A must if you are in Toulouse
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Located on a busy square surrounded by bars and cafes, "Restaurant Emile" is an institution and an unavoidable place if you want to taste "South of France cuisine".
It's usually full for diner so it's better to hold in advance.
In summer you can have diner on the terrace.

    - Parillade canarienne (roasted fish)
    - Cassoulet
    - They have a wide selection of wine

Excellent food. Truly "French" ambiance. NOT full of tourists -- when I had lunch here in Feb 2005 it was packed with locals. I think I may have been the only non-local in the place.

Upon our first visit in Nov 2004, there were 8 of us from all corners of the world -- 2 Australians, 1 German, 2 Swedes, 2 Danes, and 1 American. Despite that fact that none of us spoke, read, or understood French, the service was outstanding. One waitress spoke great English and was assigned to our table and really went above and beyond. We tipped her well. Everyone was satisfied with their dishes and wine and the price was not too expensive (not cheap either, but it was France, ya know.)

They had about 2 menus in English, which the waiter tried to give me when I returned for lunch in Feb 2005. However, I had been studying French and got seated and ordered wine and water, all in French. When the waiter saw me with my English/French dictionary was when he tried to give me the English menu -- I was just verifying the ingredients because I'm allergic to seafood and didn't want any excitement. He let me struggle through my whole order and was thoroughly charmed as I slaughtered his beloved language.

Another large group of us returned a couple of nights later. This time a German, 1 Aussie, 1 guy from the United Arab Emirates, and 4 Americans. One of the Americans was a typical rude American and I was almost embarrassed to be around him, but really had no control over the situation -- we're business acquaintances, nothing more. And we learned the hard way that "medium" or "medium rare" in America or Australia is more like "rare" in France -- but the waitress did not complain when 3 steaks were sent back to be cooked more thoroughly.

Desserts were wonderful too and I do remember having profiteroles on one occasion that were quite good.

And the wine was good and reasonably priced.

Like I have said elsewhere in my writings, this is my favorite restaurant in Toulouse (that is open to the public, anyways.)

Foie gras de canard chaud aux raisins...en entrée 15 €...en plat 22 € -- Or, warm duck liver with sauteed grapes. I had the entree portion size which was plenty big as foie gras is quite rich.

Grand Cafe de l'Opera: Lived Up to Its Reputation
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a brasserie that is highly recommended by the guidebooks. I wasn't sure I wanted that kind of atmosphere, but I walked by and peeked in, and it looked very nice -- tan leather upholstery, comfortable seating, crisp, white linens. In photos, it had appeared brightly lit and brassy, but it wasn't like that. On the Monday evening we were there, it seemed romantic. The food was excellent and artfully presented. The waitstaff was nice and helpful. Other diners got bread. We didn't. That was O.K. That happens everywhere, and I'm sure they would have given us some had we asked for it.

My husband had the oysters, which he said were the best he'd ever had, and the presentation was quite spectacular. The dish with the oysters was on a pedestal over the plate with the sauces, lemon, and bread. We both had the dessert of the day. I don't remember what it was called, but it tasted like a butterscotch mousse with some chocolate bits and maybe nuts served in something like a martini glass. I had asked the waitress to help me decide between two choices, and she did not steer me wrong. We had had a bad experience with a "corked" wine at another restaurant during our vacation, so I was glad to see that the waitress smelled the cork before even allowing us to taste. I had magret de canard, a choice on the pris-fixe menu, and it was excellent and cooked just as I had expected it to be.
