If you have the time you should spend a day exploring Toulouse and environs on a bicycle. You can cover much more ground and you might be surprised how quickly you can get out into the countryside. See my travelogue for the trip I took out the Canal du Midi, up and over the Lauragais via Montbrun and back along the Garonne. It's a beautiful trip I'd recommend to anyone.

You can rent a touring bike (VTT) from Holiday Bikes for 14 euros a day or 65 per week. Holiday Bikes is located right on the canal near the train station. Your rental will include a lock, a helmet and a repair kit.

Despite fielding a strong team Toulouse lost the 1980 final to Beziers, but from that day on the club adopted a structure and a method which have become points of reference today. Between 1984 and 1989 Robert Bru’s gameplan, put into practice by the duo of Villepreux-Skrela, constituted a revolution in rugby union. Those years were followed by a wonderful decade during which the team were Champions of France for four years running from 1994-97. A staggering achievement in the modern era. They also won the inaugural European Cup in 1996. From Charvet to Pelous, with Bonneval, Cigagna, Claude Portolan, Castaignède, Califano and Ntamack, the heroes of this wonderful saga have left a giant footprint on the Sept Deniers field.

The Sept Deniers is a 10-hectare sports complex, which is composed of a main rugby field, three adjoining ones, and a big area for the rugby school. Two public stands surround the main field, with a capacity for 4000 in the big one and 1400 seats in the small one. There is room for 6600 spectators standing in the terrace, for a complete attendance of 12000.

The first team has a workout room, three medical offices (two for the doctors and one for the physiotherapists) video material, a swimming-pool, a hammam, an equipment hall and a trainers’ office.

For the other teams, there are eight dressing-rooms, two medical offices ( doctors and physiotherapists), two equipment rooms (rugby school and other teams) and three other places, each one for under 15, juniors and referees offices.

  • if you visit Toulouse during the rugby season try to go to a game; the whole south west of France is mad about rugby, and Toulouse is the epicentre;
    buy local daily newspaper La Depeche du Midi on Friday/Saturday for details of games, or Midi Olympique - a rugby weekly newspaper (comes out Tuesday, i think);
Stade Toulousain is the big team, but there are others - Colomiers for example.
Their own stadium (Stade Ernest Wallon) holds 19,000, but for big games they play at the municipal stadium.

have a good lunch with wine and garlic before you go - to get in the mood, then pastis afterwards (beer is not so common after rugby there)

    A sport the rugby

To the origin of this sport a mistake would be, committed by a certain W. W. Ellis, that would have seized the ball at the time of one match in 1823. Appeared in the English universities, the rugby became implanted solidly in the Southwest of France from the years 1920.

The adage sounds strong and true. 15 titles of champion of France, four titles in Yves-du-Manor Contest, a title of champion of Europe...

Since more of fifteen years, the club toulousain dominates the French rugby, to the pictures of the Villepreux, Rives, Novès or Skrelas that contributed to the epic toulousaine so much.
The Stage toulousain is a complete club with his/her/its center of formation: the mind that blows to the Seven Deniers, the cave of the club, is the one of a school: an art to practice that leans on a regional recruitment, a rigorous selection since the youngest age and the respect of a certain number of game criterias; here, the rugby is registered in the hindrances since the small school. To enter to the Stage, it enter to the academy of the rugby.

    Paintball is Paintball
    But for comment:
Paintball is a sport played by people from all professions and lifestyles. It is a sport where women and men compete equally, and where age is not dominated by youth. Like a game of chess, being able to think quickly and decisively is what makes you a star in paintball. Intelligence and determination, not merely strength, speed or agility, are key to success in the sport.

Paintball is a character-building sport. Players learn about teamwork, gain self-confidence and develop leadership abilities while having fun and getting welcome stress-relief. Increasingly, corporations are finding the benefits of having their staff and management participate in paintball games.

Paintball is an exciting sport, and above all paintball is fun! It's a chance to shake off your day-to-day responsibilities and rekindle your spirit of adventure. When the adrenaline starts pumping, you can't help but love the thrill of the game!

Paintball is a combination of the childhood games "tag" and "hide & seek," but is much more challenging and sophisticated. Although there are many different game formats, typically a group of players will divide into two teams to play "capture the flag." The number of players on each team can vary from one or two, five or seven or ten, to over 1,000 on a side, limited only by the size of the playing field.

The object of the game is to go out and capture the other team's flag while protecting your own. While you are trying to capture a flag, you also try to eliminate opposing players by tagging them with a paintball expelled from a special airgun called a "paintgun." Games run from 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the field and the number of players.

Between games, players take a break to check their equipment, get more paintballs and have a snack or soda while they share stories about the thrills of victory and the usually funny agonies of defeat. Win or lose, everyone has a good time and there's usually the next game waiting for you.
