    If in combination with dressed stone as on the facade of the Capitole (photo n°1) or some private buildings (n°2) bricks in all their shades are pleasant to look at, there are public or religious buildings where their exclusive use provokes an impression of dullness, harshness as on the outside walls of some churches (n°3).
    I admit that the bricks of the religious buildings of Toulouse disappointed me. The aesthetic pleasure however returned to me during the discovery of the convents of the Augustins and the Jacobins where the colonnades are in … freestone.

    ================

    Si en combinaison avec la pierre taillée comme sur la façade du Capitole (photo n°1) ou de certains immeubles privés (photo n°2) la brique dans toutes les variantes de teinte fait plaisir à voir, il existe des immeubles publics ou religieux où son usage unique provoque une impression de monotonie, de rudesse même comme sur les côtés de certaines églises (photo n°3).
    J'avoue que l'architecture extérieure, basée sur la brique, des bâtiments religieux de Toulouse m'a déçu. Le plaisir esthétique m'est cependant revenu lors de la découverte des cloîtres des Augustins et des Jacobins où les colonnades sont en … pierre de taille.

    Toulouse pink brick

    Actually, you can't miss the brick in this rose colured city!

    Wander the streets of the old quarter and the Place du Capitole and you will see streets in Toulouse's lovely flat brick, often described as 'pink' , but it actually many shades in soft hues from pink-saffron to russet to coral; the bricks are a squashed oblong shape that makes creates a lovely textured effect on the walls .

    Demand for the blue woad dye produced in the region created great wealth and woad merchants built fabulous mansions such as the Hotel d'Assezat, now an art gallery - see my tip on the gallery.
