St.-Georges square by Klod5 La place Saint-Georges est un des lieux les plus vivants de la ville. Ici autrefois on procédait à certaines exécutions. There is another central garden of Toulouse. Place Wilson, Toulouse by rwlittle Place Wilson, statue of Pierre Goudouli, poet Toulousian...we found this nice little urban park, and ate breakfast here. There are a number of little food-shops nearby, as well as a number of nice cafes surrounding the square (OK, it's an oval). We never did learn more about Pierre, though clearly he was held in high regard. Leave a Comment Directions: Place Wilson is at the end of allees Jean Jaures.

Toulouse Fountain by Emmjai Toulouse seemed to have a lot of these. Unfortunatly, I now cannot remember much about the statue subject. Perhaps some VT'er out there will help me. I think it is Victor Hugo (but am not sure) Thanks Leave a Comment

Place Jean-Jaurès greets you as you leave the Tourist Information centre and head towards Rue d'Alsace-Lorraine. The park, which has various playground pieces and is almost always full of shrieking children, is dedicated to the French political thinker and Socialist Jean Jaurès. Born in 1889, Jaurès came from Tarn, which is not far from Toulouse, and he gradually helped to form modern French political thought. There is a large memorial to him in the Place, engraved with the words "Père de la Paix". This commemorates his embrace of pacifism in the lead-up to the First World War (like so many Socialists and Communists). His belief in pacifism ultimately cost him his life, as he was assassinated in August 1914 days before the commencement of hostilities, by a member of the Friends of Alsace-Lorraine. Today, the park also contains a monument to Charles de Gaulle, and its most notable aspect is the constant gaggle of Roma who hang out there and beg for money. The Square of the Closed Wells or La Place des Puits Clos is essentially just another part of the old city of Toulouse that has been converted into upscale shops and designer boutiques. Nevertheless, this is still a fairly interesting square to visit, as, in addition to the shops and boutiques, there are also plenty of examples of the rich artistic heritage of the city. For example, the beautiful fountain in the centre of the square, and the neo-Classical fountain (that was turned off) on one of the sides of the square. A great place to take pictures and relax. There is also a gourmet sweets shop that sells delicious ice cream in the Square - definitely try the mulberry flavour!
