To get to Calais from Dover, I took the ferry. The boat was nice, and they had a duty-free shop. It was also inexpensive.

Calais is easily reachable by ferry, hovercraft and seacat. You can get any of these from several English ports but Dover is the nearest at about 20 miles.

P&O Stenna have a great fleet of cross channel ferries that sail from Dover to Calais every day of the year. These car ferries are built to be more like luxury cruise liners than cross channel ferries, and after the terrible disaster off zebrugga in the 80s these ships are equiped with the latest saftey equipment. The journey takes about 1 and a half hours and there is loads to do on board.

The Dover to Calais cross channel service has a very good courtesy bus service that takes you to the town of Calais if you decide to go without your car, at the Dover end they will take you to the town and train station and i believe Folkestone. There is no charge for this service.

Calais has a good road network making it easy to get around. If driving around the centre of town watch out for one-way streets that can catch you out with inadequate warning signs.
Navigating the city is easy if you stick to the main streets. Venture anywhere else and a local road map is a must.
