Remenberance @ La plaine au Bois
Between Wormhout and Esquelbecq, Street of Dunkirk, happend one of the first atrocities of the second war.
May 28 1940, while they protect the troop collection towards Dunkirk for a boarding towards England, about one hundred British are done prisoners by the SS troops. They confined them in a small barn, stuck to one another. Against all the conventions of the war, the personal guards of Adolph Hitler begins strafing the barn. By "miracle" two (only) will survive the slaughter.
Today, the field is reserved to the memory. A barn reconstruction collects the crown of "poppies" deposited by the visitors.
More far a hill with a table of orientation mentioning the principal directions where happend different passes facts of weapons.

Entre Wormhout et Esquelbecq, Rue de Dunkirk, ce passa une des premières atrocités de la 2 ème guerre.
Le 28 mai 1940, alors qu'ils protègent le retrait des troupes vers Dunkerque pour un embarquement vers l'Angleterre, une centaines de Britanniques sont faits prisonniers par les troupes SS. On les enferma dans une petite grange, collés les uns aux autres. Contre toutes les conventions de la guerre, la garde personnelle d'Adolphe Hitler se met à mitrailler la grange. Par "miracle" deux (seulement) survivrons le carnage.
Aujourd'hui, le terrain est réservé au souvenir. Une reconstruction de la grange recueille les couronne de "poppies" déposées par les visiteurs.
Plus loin une butte couronnée d'une table d'orientation mentionnant les principales directions où se passèrent différents faits d'armes.

As everywhere in France (and equally in Belgium) a monument to the war deaths recalls the sacrifice of young people for our liberty.
This one is placed facing the city hall, well to the place center. Which was not my surprise to see to figure my name in the middle of the unfortunate others! It is true that one this finds here in the fatherland of my ancestors.

Comme partout en France (et également en Belgique) un monument aux morts des guerres rappelle le sacrifices de jeunes gens pour notre liberté.
Celui-ci est placé face à l'hotel de ville, bien au centre de la place.
Quelle ne fût pas ma surprise de voir figurer mon nom au milieu des autres malheureux! Il est vrai qu'on ce trouve ici dans la patrie de mes ancêtres.

As it is often the case in the Flemish towns, a kiosk to music holds court on the market.
Placed there in 1930, it is a lot older one since it was bought to the era from the city of Cassel (some kilometres to the south)
It is the witness of the community life of the beginning of the 20th century.

Comme c'est souvent le cas dans les villages flamands, un kioske à musique trône au centre de la place.
Placé là en 1930, il est beaucoup plus ancien puisqu'il fût acheté à l'époque à la ville de Cassel (quelques kilomètres au sud)
Il est le témoin de la vie associative du début du 20ème siècle.

Esquelbecq castle
A first castle (in wood) would have existed to the 9 th century.
It's known that a restoration already had place in 1606.
Currently another restoration of breadth is in runs. This castle and its gardens is not authorised for a visit but you have a good idea of his pace and his importance from the gates trimming the place.
Eight towers reinforce the majesty from the bricks building. A line of white rocks separates the ground floor from the floor.
It is classified since 1987.

Un premier château (en bois) aurait existé au 9 ème siècle.
On sait que une restauration eu déjà lieu en 1606.
Actuellement une autre restauration d'envergure est en court. Ce château et ses jardins ne se visite pas mais on a une bonne idée de son allure et son importance depuis les grilles bordant la place.
Huit tours renforcent la majesté de l'ensemble en briques. Une ligne de pierres blanches sépare le rez de chaussée de l'étage.
Il est classé depuis 1987.
