Packing List

Purses and fanny packs are not recommended. However as many women cannot part with them, many travel stores sell purses that have a steel cord in the handle. The purse straps, if length allowed, should be worn around the neck in the front to avoidpickpockets. Also backpacks are prime targets of thieves. As they are facing away from you, it’simpossible to see if someone is going through your bag. If at all possible lock the zippers together toprevent this.

Study Abroad This tip should actually be under Accomodations but I want it to show up on my main page of France.Literally thousands of B&B and cottages can be rented through http://www.gites-de-france.fr/eng/index.htm (Gîtes de France). I've done this at least 20 times. Sometimes just B&B on farms, or village houses or town houses. Sometimes a cottage for a month. In every price range and comfort. The fun is that they are all privately owned and if you want you can really be immmersed in the French way of life.So for accomodation I'd recommend Chambre d'hôte (B&B) and Gîtes de France any time.

Always bring an extra bag for great souveniers. Make sure to leave some room in your luggage. Sneakers or comfortable shoes for those long walks. Be handy with a small umbrella as you never know when you'll need it (most of our days in France during March was cloudy and rainy, but we still enjoyed!) Bring an excellent camera - this includes disposal ones, too, so you can take wonderful pictures like the panoramic view I took from the Eiffel Tower. Kodak makes a disposable Advantix camera that can take panoramic pictures (that is a tip, in case you are worried about losing your expensive camera) A journal of some sort to jot down your trip; and a sketch pad, as well, for the artist in you.

Well, with all those sights you just have to take lots of film!!! I would suggest packing at least two cameras, especially in summer. No, it's not that in summer they break down more quickly:))) It is just that you should put different films in them. One should be charged with ISO 200 film - the weather is almost always sunny, so it would be a right idea. And the other is to have ISO 400 (or, even better, ISO 800) film so that you would get good photos inside the Cathedrals and other monuments (or at night) when can not or do not wish to use flash. As for availability, all the photo supplies you might possibly need can be found easily in Italy. ATMs and Plastic money: they are the most convenient way to take your money abroad. You get lots of benefits and (almost!!) no problems. You'll get lower exchange rate than if you were to exchane your cash, and you will pay lower commissions...

Make sure to bring a daypack too, for your daily hikes. A full backpack is to heavy carrying through the mountains. In summertime it can be really hot op there. Beware of sunburns. Bring good shoes. When you are up in the mountains you hardly see any other people of villages. Make sure to bring all the medical care you need in case of emergency.

If you are going for a few days you won't need too much, a good pair of walking shoes is very important! It was particularly cold in January. Bring some warm sweaters and a good water-proof jacket. I have also been there in April and it rained for 7 days solid so be prepared for anything!

Small and on wheels. I take a 22 inch on wheels and a small backpack on wheels. The small backpack can always go piggyback on the 22 inch. Always, always wear a money belt and use it for your money, travellers checks, and passport. Two pair of good quality walking shoes including sandles. Layer your clothes as it can be cool in the mountains and really hot in central France. You can get everything there you need if you forget to pack it.

Always carry a bit of cash, some U.S. dollars, a map, pencil and paper (for drawing pictures for people), small cheap calculator for pricing and bargaining, basic phrase sheet, basic toiletries, and most of all.... learn to do without.

Most Europeans, I have noticed, do not feel the need to completely alter their appearance everyday. That should reassure those of you who feel the need to pack more than a 21 inch carryon. Carryon, rewear, and leave the jeans at home. Family Travel Toiletries are expensive in Paris, and elsewhere in France. If you run out of shampoo, toothpaste, or eyejuice, don't go to a pharmacie. Get ye to a grocery store like Super U, Prisunic, or others, and you'll find cheap stuff. While Kristen finds it helpful to carry two cameras (yeesh!), I only carry one, an Olympus Stylus Epic, and my husband carries one, a Yashica T4. We load both with 800 speed Fuji film. This speed film can go into the x-ray machine without fogging. If you're concerned about that, go to the FNAC or local photo shop and have only the negatives developed locally, then develop prints at home. By the way, my husband is a...
