  • You can buy anything you need at this place, from toiletries to food and drinks, to dishes, to small appliances, and you can find these stores in most French cities and towns. This one that we went to often was located near the University de Belle Beille and outside of the centre ville so it was convenient for us to stop here after class before we caught the bus back to the dorm. To find more stores like this here and anywhere in France go here

Groceries and toiletries are cheap here so stock up.

Like I said prices are cheap, 1.5 liter bottled waters for example were as cheap as 27 centimes.

Every Wednesday they would have an open air market on one of the city streets...I really wish I could tell you where to look for this place. I didn't have any of my bearings straight when we visited this place early in the trip so I have no idea where it was set up and we never went back...but it was great. We saw everything there, sharks on display at the seafood stand, French pastries, whole rabbits, flowers. And it was just fun to watch the locals doing their thing and shopping. All new to a bunch of Americans who are used to buying everything in the grocery store.

Get some mille feuille at one of the pastry shops.

    Cheap!

Galeries Lafayette: Grocery Shopping in City Center

  • Right in the Place de Ralliement in city center, there is a large multi story Galeries Lafayette. Anyone who knows France has heard of this place. More expensive than the Super-U obviously. But if you can't find a cheaper place that is close, this is a good place to shop for everyday items, clothing, and groceries.
They had an amazing fruit section, fish too. A little bakery. Sodas, crackers, pate, wine, etc. Great place to grab food on your way home and it has a bigger selection than the smaller groceries. (Super-U has the best selection though- see other tip).
I bought crackers and soup mix, water, croissants, pate, and a little bottle of wine for 9-11 euros when I lived there. Not too shabby.
And if you need clothing, it's right upstairs. This place was a one stop shop.

Clothes. Groceries. Bedding. Kitchen supplies. Books.

    Moderate pricing.

  • This place had it all. A short walk from the university and you could get groceries galore for cheap!! I loved their cheese selection and the bakery prices were great, even for France (where pastries are affordable anyways!). I remember purchasing a large apple tart for one of our dorm dinner parties for about 4 euro! What a steal!!! Not to mention, you could buy stationary supplies, cards, and much more.
For a student or backpacker on a budget, this is the place to go!
