The old Windmill

Take a look at the photo and guess what it is.

On seeing this old construction in Doue la Fontaine, I had no idea. It was even hard to find information, but now I have, and I know I was looking at was is left of a Cavier Windmill, which dated back to 1774. All that is left is the massereau and pivot.
Long time ago, there were lots of windmills in this area, three different varieties to be exact. We saw a Dutch windmill later on.

It is listed as historical monument.

Imagine 4 hectares of landscaped park, mainly filled with Roses.............The perfume, the colour, the setting, no wonder they hold weddings in 'this' garden.

It was only opened to the public in 1999, and has over 1,300 different Rose Varieties of all shapes and sizes, old & new varieties. Altogether, there are more than 13000 Rose bushes, now, that is a lot of beautiful Roses.
Roses are named and anything to do with a Rose is available in the Kiosk/Shop, where you can have that cup of morning/afternoon tea.
I have never seen such huge Rose bushes in all my life, they were wonderful, so full of bloom, and the perfume of some, was something to die for!!!!
What a picture this place was.

A MUST VISIT FOR ROSE & GARDEN LOVER'S

OPEN......

vultures

This is a very special zoo. Not that they have a world famous collection but the location is unique. This zoo is located in an old stone mine. Some animal cages are located in really large spaces , like the big cats , and you can walk with the ibises .... you walk in tunnels to reach another space. The vultures can leave the park if they wont , and the often fly above the area. Watch the mini hippo swim under water... If you are lucky the owner will call his siamangs. When u visit the loire vally , just leave one castle for what it is and visit this zoo.

AUBERGE DE LA ROSE: Nice Hotel, Doué-la-Fontaine

balhannah Says:  A Logis Hotel, the Auberge De La Rose was a nice, reasonably priced Hotel to stay at.We were travelling by Car and were happy when they said it could be put in the lock-up garage for free. Our room was good, had free Wi-Fi connection, the usual services and Tea & Coffee...

tunnel at dou

Although it might be sunny and a warm day... Since the zoo is build in an old stonemine (marl- mine) the lower parts and the tunnels could be cold. So if u are going , take something with you like a sweater or jacket. No problems on the higher parts.

TROGLODYTE VILLAGE
1 more image

Located in the area, are lots of these dwellings. We went to a Rochemenier village which was very close to Doue-La-Fontaine and wandered around the streets.
People were living in this village. I don't know if it was 'off season,' but none of the Tourist cave's where you can go in for a look were open.
One village for me was enough to see, can't say what I saw was anything spectacular!
