Guérande Things to Do

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The old city has a medieval character, with cobblestone roads and huge fortified walls surrounding it. Besides the open air market that you might see in the summer months here, there is a museum housed in the old walls, several food shops, restaurants and a cathedral. Get lost and find your way again for a nice experience.

There was an open air market spread throughout most of the city on the Saturday when we visited. Besides just food there were stands selling clothing and toys. We got a real kick out of this pair of toddler's pants in this picture. I remember buying a sweater here as well, as it was, oddly enough, 50 F in June that day.

The most interesting and romantic trip can be found in Guerande, guided by Mr Fredo Guillou on board of his paddle boat as he describes the lifestyle of the salty ponds of Guerande, where salt is extracted from water. The setting is beautiful, and there are many accomodations around (form Le Croisic to La foret du Gavre).

It was quite a picture, one might have thought it was mid winter, or late october during a surprise chill in the weather. But here we were a bunch of American students in shorts and sweaters huddling up to a fire in the stone fire place in a heart-warming creperie that jumped out at us while we were touring Guerande. They had a long menu of creative galettes and crepes from the typical jambon et fromage galette to one a friend of mine ate with sardines in it. yick, but ya gotta love it.

Favorite Dish: I got Jambon et Fromage and it was very filling. Also order a nice espresso to end your meal.

Guérande Favorites

Favorite thing: It is not very big, but it really deserves a visit if you can stay to read and understand all the history of the region, of the citadel, of the people that leaved there.
Once at the second floor you can step outide on the wall and have a short walk here on part of the surrounding wall of the citadel.

Fondest memory: I really felt like in Sighisoara, in Romania. Also seemed a little like Vieux Lyon.
I can still feel the atmosphere of Guerande now, 24 hours after the visit.
