Best local spot is La Govelle, located in Batz sur Mer, a few kilometers from La Baule. Never surfed there and have very few knowledge of surfing but this is the place best know in the region. Nothing to compare with south western waves though, but there you will find the best waves near from La Baule. Note that there are several rocks on the beach and people get hurt pretty frequently.

There is a road made only for bicycles between La Baule and Guerrande. This is a great way to go to guerrande and visit surburbs without a car, and the trip is really nice. A good tip is to go to guerrande going throw marais salants to see how salt is extracted from the sea. View is very original. Then visit Guerrande and its typical old town, then come back with this special road made for byckes that always do down directly from Guerande to La Baule. To find the road, ask Tourist Information in Guerrande a map.

I'd suggest going to the biggest beach in Europe (I think!) - it's 7 km long, so you really have a place to walk & dip your feet into the ocean... : )
