by chess_machine For those who have dreamt of submarines, space conquest and losed themselves in science-fiction, le Musée Jules Verne might be a nice experience to do. Jules Verne was born in Nantes and is our favorite "VIP". For those who dont know him, he is the author of major science-fiction masterpieces, such as "20000 leagues under the sea". Went to the museum a while ago but remember it was a fun experience to do as a child. Furthermore, the location is perfect. Situated in Butte Sainte Anne, great view over the Loire and on Nantes. Most amazing monument in Nantes is probably the castle, in the city center. Well, I like the idea that we have a CASTLE in the city center, and people live near from it as if it was pretty common (I personnaly do). Funny experience to see people taking the tramway to go to the railway station and going near the castle without even looking at it. Well, I even forgot to mention it in the travel pages for many months and just remembered we had one... ;) Ah, when beauties are near you all the time, you sometimes dont pay attention anymore. So, what about the castle? Main historic tip: it used to be THE castle of Briton kings, among other the Queen Anne de Bretagne. Havent been inside for a long time but remember it is nice and a must do if interested in history. Leave a Comment

This place is a JEWEL of Art Nouveau. Passage Pommeray is a place that sets some shops. Passage in english could be translated as "path" but its more than that. Sure, it links to streets: rue Crébillon (one of the biggest shopping street) and another one (whose name I dont remember). But its a big path with stairs and many shops. Its art deco style, that is beginning of XXth century and has a very rich architecture inside. It will take you only a few minutes to stay there but it will make you go to another world. Leave a Comment Address: Passage Pommeray (city center)Directions: It is better to enter from rue Crébillon, near la place Graslin

La Cathédrale by chess_machine Beautiful cathedral. Not one of France's most beautiful though, as Chartres, Amiens, Notre-Dame or Reims can be. So, it is not a mandatory place to go. Not a 3 star sightseeing place. Still, it is one of nantes' most famous monument and if interested by architecture or history one of the few places to go in Nantes. For the little story, the cathedral's roof got burnt a few decade ago. Major event in Nantes, for you could see the roof burning from far away. Well, it got rebuilt since then... Another little story: it is located on Place Louis XVI (yes, the king who was killed during the French revolution) but the real name of the place is Place du Maréchal Foch. Nantais keep on calling it Place Louis XVI because of the statue of Louis XVI that is raised in the middle of the place. By the way, only 3 cities in France have a statue of Louis XVI... by chess_machine Within an hour from Nantes, you have access to several beaches, very different. Interested by Britanny, you can visit the superb Golfe du Morbihan (south of Britanny), which capital is Vannes. Interested by fashion beach, with trendy clubbing, boutiques and 20 year old beauties, La Baule is the place to go. Fond of islands, you can go to Noirmoutier, Belle-Ile or l'Ile d'Yeu. If you dont want to go too far away and want to find a beach within 45 minutes, then go to Saint Brevin or Pornic. Well, there are more than 20 beaches within an hour from Nantes so you have plenty of different choices. If interested, check my travel pages on Noirmoutier, La Baule, Saint Nazaire. Leave a Comment

by chess_machine If interested by museums, then le Musée des Beaux Arts de Nantes is a must see. Even if you are not fond of arts, it is an interesting museum. It is one of the biggest Musée des Beaux Arts of France. I think 3rd after Paris and Lyons and has a great collection of permanent paintings. They do quite often excellent exhibitions. I remember one from Kandinsky a few years ago that was truely amazing. They had like 50 to 100 paintings and drawings from Kandinsky. l'Opéra Graslin raises in the city center. Named from its architect Graslin, who built it in the XIXth century. It is one of nantes' major work of art. Beautiful outside and inside. Only been inside when I was a kid with my school. Remember it was quite amazing. So, if you are really lucky and plan it a long time before you might have the opportunity to assist to one of the few operas that are played here each year (6 or 7 operas this year). Sure it will be a pleaseant trip back to the XIXth century. Otherwise, you can enjoy it from outside and take a cup of coffee "sur la Place Graslin" in either La Cigale (see restaurant tip) or Le Molière, one of Nantes' most famous café and one of the most expensive one. by chess_machine Nantes has been badly destroyed during WWII and Le Bouffay is the oldest part of the city that has remained. It is a great place to wander, stop for a coffee and enjoy the nightlife. For those who have been to Rennes, it may remind you of the old city from this town. Briton style, with some wooden houses, creperies, paved streets. by chess_machine The Museum is called Musée Dobrée. For those interested in ethnology and archeology, the Musée Dobrée may be a good place to go. Located in the city center, 5 minutes walking from Place Graslin, in an old house with a relaxing park. Have been to an exhibition of greek vases, which was interesting. Nothing to compare with Metropolitan Museum though... Leave a Comment Address: rue Voltaire

by sandravdp A lovely place at the beach is NOTRE DAME DES MONTS. You will will enjoy it here. The sea is not very deep and it's very calm when the weather is nice. It's very suitable for small children, but always keep an eye on them. On the picture you see me standing on the beach by the sea. The things on the ground are sea lettuce leaves. The water is so clean that it grows on the bottom of the sea. If you like beaches, this is the place to be. Leave a Comment Other Contact: More about this beach you can se
