For La Rochelle being the first European marina, this activity is soooo obvious.
For sailing, go to Port des Minimes area where you would find those powerboats (catamaran) that use to compete in some races. However, since lately, l'ancien Bassin des chalutiers is open for business as well.
The pic is not in Port des minimes area. It's in either in Vieux Port either, specifically, in Bassin des chalutiers. Sorry I don't have them all in mind.
I am NOT a sailor, please check the website to see what La Rochelle and its port des Minimes offers to you. Conditions, locations are in their website too
Equipment: What would you wear when sailing?
Windproof jacket? Dockside shoes? Sunglasses? Cap? Comfortable pants or bermuda shorts? Sailors would know... but I would say don't forget Sunblock lotion or high SPF lotion. :))

Located a bit souther to Vieux port, find in Port des minimes area, some nice beach. Plus it used to house apartments with specific style (grey- brown wooden lumbers, cubic shapes...).
However, if you go to Chýtelaillon, beach is nice and empty as well. This time, nice bungalows, houses and apartments in pastel colours.. along the waterside. Chatelaillon is 10 km south of La Rochelle. It is a quaint beach resort, with a small but elegant casino. With restaurants, shops and those little pastel villas.
No huge ugly buildings like those you would find in Belgian coast. Thank God, they could preserve original construction plan.
Equipment: swimwear + sunglasses + sun lotion + towels (?)
