The TGV from Paris to Poitiers takes between 1:30 to 1:50 h depending on the amount of stops. In Poitiers you can get around by bus (e.g. line 9 if you want to go to Parc du Futuroscope) or taxi. This is the oldest Christian building still extant in France. It was built in the middle of the 4C. Originally it consisted of a rectangular narthex or atrium connecting to a similar room with a baptismal pool. Preceding these were two small rooms for disrobing, one for each sex. It was built over foundations of a previous structure destroyed by the barbarians in 276. In the 6C after Visigothic damage, rectangular apses were added, giving it a cross shape. In the 10C, baptism by immersion was abandoned, the pool was filled in , the dressing rooms eliminated, the atrium was given a polygonal shape and rounded absidioles were let in the north and south walls. Above on these two walls are Merovingian (6C) flat carved capitals on flat pilasters and a circular vegetal stone decoration. Leave a Comment

This was one of my favourite relaxing things to do at the weekend, and i'd come home with loads of fresh fruit and vegetables and feel really healthy Address: Place charles de galle- you won't miss it!

Visit some of the surrounding countryside, and the small villages nearby. Chauvigny to the east is charming, and has a lovely medieval old town centre on the hill with some nice hill top cafes.

In Summer, the front of the cathedral is lit up with multicoloured lights, its some sort of tradition I think, but it looks really pretty! On my first day in Poitiers, we wandered down to the town centre and were welcomed by this multicoloured sight, it was really nice!
