Lors des couchers de soleil sur l'océan (et c'est toujours un spectacle fascinant), il faut être attentif au tout dernier rayon. par grand beau temps, si l'air est clair et limpide, le dernier rayon est vert émeraude !
At the time of the sunset on the ocean (and it is always a fascinating spectacle), it is necessary to be attentive to the last ray. by big good weather, if air is clear and limpid, the last ray is emerald green !

The restaurants along the seafront do offer a bigger selection of dishes but the location means they come at a premium. The menu is very French with lots of seafood on offer. There are lots more places to eat in the town only a few hundred yards behind us but we went for the view and terrace table while the sun was shining.
Favorite Dish: I started with the Soupe de poisson, accompagnee de fromage, croutons et rouille..€6.90 Fish soup with cheese and croutons, about £4.70, quite nice, plenty of flavour.
Main course La Fameuse Parillada de Poissons €19.50 ( £13.25 ) a house special dish, large plate of assorted fish accompanied by langoustines and mussels ( sardin, swordfish, salmon, cod ) the mussels were not in season, mine looked like the New Zealand green lipped variety.
Mostly overcooked and overseasoned (too much salt) the whole lot was served with a large baked potato which made it a large meal but the sun was shining when we ate and i washed it all down with a few cold beers.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: To your left the mighty Gironde river, to your right the Atlantic Ocean, the weather can be changable (especially in May) so remember - There is no such thing as bad weather, there is only the wrong clothes.

During the war Royan took quite a pounding from the allies consequently the surviving houses had some new neighbours and a variety of styles came to the area.
