Cours Mirabeau by skydivefred All year round, you can have a drink at a café on the "Cours Mirabeau". It is a wide and famous avenue a bit like the Champs Elysées in Paris, only smaller, of course. In the summer, your are confortably settled under 4 rows of planetrees. In the winter, you can still sit outside because the terraces are heated with outside infrared heaters. For guys(!) : Aix has been elected the sexiest french town a few years ago. Sitting and looking from one of these cafés is certainly a nice place to enjoy the sight of beautiful ladies !!!!! ;-)) Leave a Comment

L'hotel de ville by skydivefred If you look at a map of the city centre, you'll find the oldest, medieval part of the town lies between the ring road and the cours Mirabeau. This road and the "cours" used to be the place where the walls of the town stood for protection. On the other side of the "cours", stands the "Quartier Mazarin" all built in the 18th century. If you really want to enjoy the architectural variety, pay attention to details, sculpted wooden doors, look up at the walls where you'll notice many statues. More photos on the travelogue pages. Keep following those little brass plaques in the street...go up to the Atelier Cezanne just to the north of the city. This is where the great artist, obsessor of the mountain, astonisher of Paris with his apples (his words, not mine), would work. The studio was built in 1902 on Les Lauves (the hill) and was the creative home of the "new art" of which Cezanne liked to call himself the primitive. He died in 1906 of pleurisy. It was later bought by Marcel Provence, and preserved, and then given to the University of Aix-Marseille (my former employers). In 1955, Marilyn Monroe of all people visited, and wrote in the visitors book, "a wonderful visit". She crossed out, "boo-boo-be-doop". Now the studio is owned by the City. It's address is: Atelier Paul Cezanne, 9, Avenue Pauk Cezanne 13090 Aix-en-Provence email: atelier.cezanne@wanadoo.fr tel: 04 42 21 06 53 Leave a Comment

by rickyvilla81 As you see from my badly scanned old postcard of Aix, the place has not really changed all that much even today. So you see, to visit Aix is to see an almost perfectly preserved old town in the heart of Provence, and if that doesn't attract you, well, I'm off mate, I retire. Do one. Leave a Comment

Gordes almighty! by rickyvilla81 Being so well located, Aix is a perfect place to base yourself if you wish to explore Provence. Transport (ie, bus) links are good to most towns and cities in the region, but it is best to hire a car, explore the Luberon (including Gordes - pictured), go to old Avignon, Van Gogh's Arles, Marseille, Cannes, St.Tropez, the Gorges du Verdon, the Var, even as far as sunny Nice. Provence is great - see it from Aix. Leave a Comment

by rickyvilla81 Here's a picture of four actors, rehearsing their parts in the Parc Jourdan. They play in the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, as Peter, Lucy, Edmund and Susan. If you know the book, can you guess which one plays which? The actors are: Pilar Gomez (Lucy), Yves Dondicol (Edmund), Elisabeth Luccioni (Susan), and Yannick Ferry (Peter). Leave a Comment

The New Harry Potter book was bigger than expected by rickyvilla81 Just off Avenue de l'Europe is the big library of Aix, the Cite du Livre. Here is not just a great collection of books and cds, but also a gallery and exhibition centre, where many famed people come and give talks or put on shows. Toni Morrison, author of Beloved and Tar Baby, held a three day festival here, which included readings, films, talks and discussions, plus more. Arthouse Films are regularly shown here from all over the world. The great thing about this place though is the architecture - the building consists of huge classic French books, from Le Petit Prince to l'Etranger, leaning upon one another. Leave a Comment

by rickyvilla81 Take a trip to Marseille, the large seaport city that lies to the south of Aix. Shuttle Buses run from the Gare routiere every ten minutes, taking just under half an hour, at a cost of 4.10 euros. The Old Port is great, taste the legendary bouillabaisse, and shop in the Canebiere... Leave a Comment

by rickyvilla81 This is Roi Rene, who was King of Provence back in the middle ages. He is not to be confused with the cafe owner from Allo Allo, although you will from time to time see local waitresses trying to seduce him. This statue can be found at the end of the Cours Mirabeau. Leave a Comment

"Simon de la Rotonde" by rickyvilla81 A simple walk around the centre-ville, starting at the Rotonde. This large fountain, encircled by the busy roundabout Charles de Gaulle, was erected in 1860, and is topped by three statues which represent Justice (facing Cours Mirabeau), Agriculture (facing Marseille), and les Beaux Arts (which faces Avignon). From here, you can either walk up the Cours Mirabeau, down Ave Bonaparte towards Cours Sextius, up Rue Espariat, or down Boulevard Roi René towards Parc Jourdain... Don't forget, you can also find the large and convenient Tourist Office here at the Rotonde. Leave a Comment
