    UPDATE 1/29/06

I went to Chez Antoine this week on a return trip after a number of years and the original owners had sold the place 6 years ago and a hip young group seemed to be running it. I had the lasagna which was quite good, but not superbe. I did not have the tiramisu. The waiter said that it is better than what the old owners served. I may try it before I leave, but then I may rather just have the memory of the "tiramusu to die for".

This is still a very charming, tiny restaurant and very popular.

This was my absolute favorite restaurant in Aix-en-Provence when I lived in Aix in 1994-96.
I had loved everything that I ate there, but the tiramisu was the best, even better than any that I had eaten in Italy. I can't say that now with the new owners. I haven't had the courage to try it.

Very often, the problem with French food restaurants is that they are horribly expensive. This one gives you some really good French cuisine at an affordable price.you'll find quite a variety of dishes too.
Unlike the other restaurant I mentionned, the atmosphere is slightly more "snobbish"...

Not only the food is very good, but the people there try to create a particular atmosphere. The underground rooms are set with cushions on the floor and you eat your food put on low tables.

This is a Libanese/Turkish restaurant. When you eat the different dishes, it's like having electricity in your mouth. My favourite restaurant in Aix.
The owner is always attentionate and never forgets to give you a free extra you don't expect... well I suppose you do now !!!!!
Price / quality rate is unbeatable !

Don't miss the "taboulé à la menthe" !!!!

Lovely, nice and cheap restaurant. You can have all kinds of salads, pizzas, tender meat, grillades hors d'oeuvre (as they say in English!!!). The prices are very affordable and if you happen to be in Aix during the warm season, you'll have a table outside and you'll enjoy a beautiful street scene.

The only thing I ever ate here was the warm goat cheese salad, which was excellent. I did drink a lot of cafe creme and pastis at Les Deux G, however.

As a single woman living in Aix, I found this a great place to meet other single/divorced French women and to try to make friends with the Aixoise.

The wait staff does not seem to rush you out of there, so don't be offended if they don't bring you the bill immediately

    Great for people watching.

Alot of the students like this place, but older people feel comfortable there, as well. At the time I was there, they served a great steak tartare.

Downstairs has a kind of bistro look, but upstairs is more formal and elegant.

Since le grillon means cricket you will see the large crickets lighting at the top or the walls.

    Monday - Sunday 07:30 - 02:00

    Steak tartare and sandwiches.

At this typical Proven?al restaurant, all the food is great. It's in a nice part of town, off the main tourist track. The food is made with fresh local ingredients, and the boulliabse in particular was the best I've had. After all, Marseille is only a short drive away.

    The boulliabase is the best.

  • We were near the Cours Mirabeau trying to find Le Village, which was reviewed on this website and could not find it. I found a local shopkeeper and asked him if he knew of that restaurant and he had not. I asked him if he had a restaurant he could recommend and he showed me this restaurant, which was down some stairs and in a cave. I asked him if he knew of any good ones where you could eat outside, as it was such a nice day. He said, "Well, you can go to the Cours Mirabeau, but it will be twice as expensive and the food is not good." So I smiled and we went to his recommendation and we were so glad we did. It took us a while to realize that it might not have been a seventeenth century restaurant, as the walls had great stonework and it was so authentic, without being campy. We finally realized some changes had been made but an artisan had done a great job on the faux finish on actual stonework. We only saw locals in there, and the art on the walls was really tasteful. I would recmmend going for lunch. Entree, plat et dessert and one glass of wine was 21 euros. Entree et plat or plat et dessert and an hors boisson was 17 euros. The risotto to start was great. I also had pot au feu, foie gras poele and truffles, which was very good. For dessert, you can get a selection of cheeses or desserts. Don't order one of each, thinking you can share it all, because your husband will want to eat all of the dessert and none of the cheese. But seriously, the dessert was just a bite of 3 different things, which is perfect for one person. The hostess and the waiter were very kind and respectful.

the risotto was my favorite thing. A special note: this is closed Saturday for lunch, Sunday and Monday

Le Riad is a top flight Moroccan restaraunt that has a full menu, including vegetarian options.
It does not look much from the streetfront. All you get to see is a door and a menu. But enter into the hallway and walk through and you find a large hidden oasis of a courtyard, partly under tree cover, and partly under large tents. Decorated in Moroccan style with fountain and tiles.
The atmosphere is great, very relaxed, but very alive. We ate there on a Wednesday night, and by 9pm people were queing for tables - and this is a restaraunt that can seat around 120 people! Many different types of people too, with local politicians, families, tourists and down to earth couples with dogs.
Its not cheap - we spent around 70E for the two of us, without going overboard on the drinks or deserts.
The staff are very good natured and speak good English, and are kept very busy, so you have to make an effort to remind them of your presence at times if you want to keep things ticking over.
The food is very good, fresh and clean. The main courses are unfussy and very filling, but the starters and deserts are outstanding.
Things get going at 8pm, but get there just a little earlier to stake your place and relax with a drink in the beautiful surroundings.

    Its all good.
But a great way to end the meal is with the fresh pineapple and some mint tea.
