If you have anything resembling an interest in modern architecture and art, then do yourself a great favour and visit the Vasarely Foundation. Built around 30 years ago under the direction of the Hungarian experimental artist / architect Victor Vasarely, whose vision it was to add psychological dimensions to physical environments. This museum / gallery / monument is a step back to the most inovative aspects of the 1970s. Sadly the infrastructure of the building and grounds is suffering from some neglect, but even so, the overall effect is still amazing. The building itself consists of huge honeycomb shaped rooms, which house themed geometric art instalations. You get a taped guided tour (in various langages) which you listen to as you go around, and chill out in the different rooms. They say a picture paints a thousand words, so take a look at my photo (one of my favourites I have ever taken), as it will give you a better idea of the place than my description can. Leave a Comment Address: Approximately 3 km south west of the centreDirections: The best way to get to it is on the number 4 bus, which you pick up from the post office side of La Rotonde.

CATHEDRAIL ST. SAUVEUR, AIX-EN-PROVENCE by eden_teuling This CATHEDRAL ST. SAUVEUR was built, rebuilt and extended start=ing in the 5th Century uptill the 16th Century. The portal is wonderfully Romanesque-Gothic and the interior is splendid. There is a FONT dating back to the 5th Century and.....most wonderful discovery was the 26 Flemish Tapestries, so unexpected a find which brightened my day! Next to the Cathedral is a small but beautiful, very atmospheric CLOîTRE...see photograph....a real place for contemplation and reflection.... Leave a Comment

by skydivefred The Marché d'Aix en provence is one of the most interesting and enjoyable I've seen in France : Antiques, craftmanship, fruit and veggies, local made cheeses and charcuterie, local products, but also clothes. A very varried market indeed. I just love that mix of smells, colors, people. The market is settled every Tuesday, Thirsday, Saturday from 7 am to 1pm Leave a Comment

Place de la Ville, Aix-en-Provence by ForestqueenNYC, 3 more photos Place de l'Hôtel de Ville is really pretty and very sunny. It is also close to the Cezanne University so you will often find a lot of students taking a coffee or lunch there. Leave a Comment Address: Rue Gaston de SaportaDirections: In the center of the old town, the historic area where the main post office is located. When you see the clocktower you are there.

Market in Aix En Provence by jetimblin Every morning on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday there is a market in the center of town. The market has all sorts of local products such as clothing, cheeses, antiques, spices and produce. I would recommend grabbing some of the excellent local food here and enjoying it while walking around the market. Leave a Comment

Marseilles by englishchris Marseilles is easy to get to from Aix. Busses leave every twenty minutes from the bus station at the bottom end of Avenue des Belges. The trip takes about half an hour and costs around 4E each way. Although it is just next door, Marseilles is a world away, in that it is a BIG, BUSTLING, SMELLY, SWEATY, MULTI-CULTURAL CITY, which can be a bit of a shock after the genteelness of Aix. We spent time up in the Cours Juliene area which is a bit of a cross between Brighton and Brixton (UK), and the rest of the time around the harbour. For a laugh (and because we were lazy) we took the tourist noddy train from the harbour up to the Chuch on the hill for some amazing views. Its been over 20 years since I was last in Marseilles, and it certainly feels a bit safer now, but it is still hot and hard work. Leave a Comment

Ready to roast some chicken! by SFHulaGIrl Every day greengrocers set up their produce on the Place Richelme near the Hotel de Ville. The "grand marche" is held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays on the Place des Precheurs. You will undoubtedly find all manner of fresh fruits and vegetables, spices, teas, dried meats, candy, and so forth. Fresh food is also prepared for shoppers to eat -- roast chicken, paella, sausages... Leave a Comment Address: Place RichelmeDirections: Quartier Ancienne; near the Hotel de Ville

by skydivefred This museum is especially interesting for its permanent exhbition about dinosaurus. Indeed, Near Aix en Provence exists the largest site of fossilised dinosaurus eggs. A visit at this museum helps understanding how the area used to be in prehistoric times. Leave a Comment Address: 6 rue EspariatPhone: 04 42 27 91 27

La Bapistere inside La Cathedrale St. Saveur by rwlittle This photo shows the Merovingian baptistry inside the cathedral. At the time, the Marovingians did not mean much to me, but when we returned to the USA we arrived just in time to catch the Matrix Reloaded, and one of the characters was called "the Merovingian", so I became further interested. The Merovingians ruled France before the Carolingian kings took over (the most notable of the Carolingians was Charlemagne). Soem claim a link between the Merovingians and Mary Magdeline...I wouldn't know anything about that. Leave a Comment
