Musée Picasso at the Château Grimaldi in Antibes
  • Tip Rating:
  • PICASSO MUSEUM The most known sight in Antibes may be the Chateau Grimaldi (Picasso Museum) which was originally built in the 12C on a terrace overlooking the sea. It now showcases an impressive collection of Picasso's paintings and ceramics. The Château Grimaldi was build on the former Greek Acropolis in the 16th century. It was bought in 1925 by Antibes municipality, restored, and became a Museum. Picasso was invited and stayed there 6 months in 1946, working like a lot. When he left, he gave all the work he did there to the museum, which was further renamed the Picasso Museum. Museum collection then continued to enriched with further works of Picasso, and paintings or sculptures of other artists such as Léger, Atlan, Germaine Richier, Ernst, Picabia, Miro, Modigliani, Hartung, and Nicolas de Staël. Both Hartung and Staël lived in Antibes.

    Plage de La Gravette
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Old Antibes beach which small, sandy, pleasant (but can be crowded), faces west into the sun. What is particularly nice about the beach is that it is sheltered from waves by a small breakwater and this enclosure makes it particularly safe for children.

Stroll around the walls of the old town. Antibes was strategic within the Roman Empire occupation, named Antipolis as the city opposite Nice - "anti - polis". The fortifications are purely decorative now since the most recent occupation has been mainly from retiring elderly Brits, and the walls provide very little defence against incursion by low-cost airlines Old Antibes has a slightly "hippy" charm. Couples with equally bohemian outlook - he with pigtail but in grey, her with boho flouncy dresses and also "snow on the roof". Behind them a creative career, something unorthodox in the arts media or publishing. Ahead, growing old disgracefully, they grow old but not grow up. Good on 'em.

    Chateau Grimaud - Musee Picasso

Don't try this at home, folks!

Landmark Chateau Grimaud houses a fine collection of works by Picasso - who generously donated them to the town after painting for several months in Antibes as a guest of the Chateau in 1946. The collection includes over a hundred paintings - many discovered to be painted over older works stored in the basement that Picasso considered mediocre - iron cast sculptures and a large unusual collection of faces painted onto ceramic plates that I'm not sure would do much for your breakfast table. The visitors include many earnest ladies with sketch-pads "doing art class", paying homage to the master.

At Antibes - Octopus - worlds third largest yatch

In 2003, Paul Allen's 416 ft "Octopus" toppled 408 ft Savarona from its number one position as the world's largest yatch. The vessel cost Allen $200 million and has a permanent crew of 60 people, including several former Navy Seals. It has two helicopters, seven boats and a remote-controlled vehicle for crawling on the ocean floor. Its "James Bond" interior includes a dry dock for a submarine, which has the capacity to sleep eight for up to two weeks under water. Octopus's number one place was recently toppled by the new longer yatch commissioned by Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellisdon. His "Rising Sun" is 12 metres longer ("Mines bigger than yours, nananananaa"). Not for long however, as the Crown Prince of Dubai has ordered a 160 metre yatch "Platinum" - reference no doubt to his having paid by credit card. With oil reaching $60 a barrel the Crown Prince is going to have to find even more extravagent ways to spend those petrodollars. Microsoft's "accidental zillionnaire" Paul Allen - worth $20bn according to Forbes, third richest man in America - owns three yacht monsters - Octopus, Tatoosh & Méduse. His latest toy is an investment in the future of space tourism, reaching 62 miles above the earth, SpaceShipOne. Paul also owns the magnificent Villa Maryland on the Cap Ferrat, allowing him to host parties during the Cannes Film Festival that allow him to associate with Hollywoods most top celebrities.

It doesn't get more James Bond than this. Paul Allen's "Octopus" (shouldn't that be "Octopussy"?) holds within its internal drydock this Lurssen-built fully functioning submarine, seen here when the boot was up in Antibes a few weeks back. Perhaps its a pun on Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, when Kirk Douglas as Ned Land got snarled up in the twisting arms of a giant Octopus. Who knows. Anyway its a fantastic toy.

I've been to quite a few animal parks on my travels, and Marineland in Antibes near Nice is one of the coolest! A beautiful park near the coast of the french rivera, and a park that besides the Marineland itself also includes four smaller parks; AQUA-SPLASH, LA PETITE FERME, LA JUNGLE DES PAPILLONS and ADVENTURE GOLF. The Marineland is a oceanic park where you get to see both killer whales, dolhins and sealions perform amazing shows in big beautiful water stadiums! You'll also get the chance to see Sharks and other sea-animals here, but nothing beats the shows! When I went there in the month of July 2002, there weren't any queue-problems to get in, and there are good parking facilities. Adultes are charged (2002-prices) 24 Euros to enter the Marineland, while kids go for 16 Euros. But then you can combine the different parks into a pack and save some money. I tried the Adventure Golf also for only 1 Euro in top of the Marineland price, and it was worth it. You'll get to choose from 3 different and very beautiful 18 hole tracks!

Ranked number nine by size, Carinthia VII will persuade you that these superyatchs are not just boys toys, as it was commissioned by Heidi Horton, heiress to a German retail fortune. The sleek water-dynamic lines of its blue hull are just perfect, and make Paul Allens Octopus look like an overbloated toy from the bathtub. A true beauty anyone can see.

Nearly a full house at the Yatch Club parking lot, with spaces in short supply as the season tapers off. Newcomers included six year old Boadicea, at 231 feet, the world rank 34 yatch. She belongs to 78 year old Australian media baron Reg Grundy, who will apparently hire her out at $400,000 a week. The sailboat mast pictured is the worlds largest sloop, or some technical term like that for things with sails rather than helicopters and submarines on board. Less than a week later it was blown onto rocks at Cap Ferrat on its way to the Monaco Yatch Show. Now possibly the subject of one the worlds most expensive private insurance claim.
