When in Avignon you will find many touristic restaurants around town, with cheap menu and not so good food.
Unique Suggestions: If you have to use this restaurants make sure that the price advertised in the signs are the same as the ones in the menu, also make sure you see some other people's dishes and if they are finishing their meals and if you like what you see.
Fun Alternatives: To avoid this ask the concierge of your hotel to recommend you some local restaurant or search of it on the internt.
To walk "sur le Pont d'Avignon" costs a steep 4 EUR (or the combination with the Palais des Papes 11,50 EUR, which means that you "save" 2 EUR when visiting both Tourist Traps).
Unique Suggestions: Walk through the nice park on the hill between the palace and the Rhone until you have a wonderful view down to the river with the bridge and the nice area across the river.
The fact that 3 Popes ruled here makes the tourists believe that they could see inside the Palace something comparable to at least 5 % of the Vatican (the fraction of the Popes' history connected with Avignon). But that is not the fact. Yes, the Popes lived in incredible luxury but nothing is left from that except the almost empty buildings - and that for a steep 9,50 EUR entrance fee.
Unique Suggestions: The most impressive is that what you can see from outside, and it is for free, of course - enjoy it.
No real traps. The only trap I can think of is that you will miss a lot when you go on foot. So you better go by electric train through the city. You will get to see everything nice and at some big monuments you can get out of the little train. At transportation tips you can read more about it. Here I provide you already with a map that shows you where the train goes to or where it rides by.
On a hot day we went to a swimming pool - a fantastic sight after a long day of travelling.
Then got told that we had to wear speedo type (bikini type) costumes to swim there. Given that clothing is not much of an issue on the French beaches - this came as a surprise.
Another warning : Do not go to the 'New Avignon' - it will spoil your memories of the older version.
Try to go early in the morning, before the numerous travel buses arrive. If you like, they have tours available.
Avignon's bridge. It's very beautifull to see, in this wonderfull setting, but don't wait in line to pay an expensive fee just to walk on it 5 minutes.
Fun Alternatives: Just as beautiful from the outside...
