The Palais des Festivals
We specifically booked a unit at Marina Baie des Anges resort May 18 – 25 because the 55th Cannes International Film Festival was held at this time. Usually the Festival starts the second Wednesday in May and ends on the fourth Sunday. However, this year 2002 the festival moved up one week due to the French elections. We’ve had awesome experience!
This palace (called the Bunker by some journalists) capable of housing all kinds of assemblies, has propelled Cannes into becoming the second most popular convention town in France. The International Film Festival is held here, as well as, the MIDEM (congress of record producers), concerts of classical music, dance and theater. There are even four casinos.
I was walking along the beach and saw a few local folks playing a game which look like lawn bowling except that they are not playing on a lawn also they are using metal balls. Not sure what it was but sure was interesting to watch them play.
Cannes Invader no. 2 hovers above the Croisette
Whilst the French may have been slow on the uptake of the internet (after all much of the content is in English) they have led the way in urban street art thanks to Parisian "Invader"
Beneath the railway bridge at the eastern end of the Croisette hovers Cannes Invader n2. Immaculately placed in its local context on the wide mural of the grande Croisette and its landmarks.
Somewhere is invader number 3 - but where?
Parking for free
Like many cities in the French Riviera, parking your car can be a nightmare and somewhat expensive (depending where you park), especially during the high season.
If you don't mind walking (make sure to wear comfortable shoes), locals or those who know Cannes very well, tend to park their cars around the end of Boulevard de la Croisette (around n° 98, towards Avenue des Hesperides and Avenue Tristan Bernard). Just to make sure it's free and allowed to park, check if the white dotted line along the parking space ISN'T written "PAYANT" (paid) or "LIVRAISON" (delivery parking only).
If you're not good to remember where you parked your car, it may be a good idea to take a picture of the surroundings (or write it down the description of the surroundings) as soon as you park. Make sure you don't write "next to a palm tree" because you will find them all along the Croisette. :P
