At the top of the Suquet hill the Church of Notre-Dame de l'Espérance (16-17th c.) looks more like a fortress as a church in late gothic style. The bell tower (16th c.) was part of the ancient hedging wall. The vaulted opening in the tower joins the square at the entrance of the church with the garden along the castle. This clock tower is nice and lit up at night as well as the tower of the castle. Both are the beacons of Cannes.

Inside one can see that this was a fisherman church from the boat models at the feet of saints' statues like the one with St Anne.
On the High Altar stands a notable 17th c. statue of a "Vierge Couronnée" Virgin with a crown holding a ship anchor.

Each year in July during the "Nuits Musicales du Suquet" classical music is played on the square outside the church.

Eglise Russe de Cannes

Once a winter destination, Cannes was frequented in the late 1800s by the Russian aristocracy escaping harsh winters in their homelands. As the influx and influence of the community increased, Eglise Saint Michel-Archange, a Russian Orthodox church, was built in Cannes to serve the members. Naturally, the distinctive Russian architectural style, complete with its blue onion-shaped dome and colourful façade, was chosen for the church. The church lies hidden in a residential neighbourhood away from the sight of mass tourists who visit Cannes.

Built in 1894, Notre Dame des Pins is a Catholic chapel. When it was completed, it was a lone structure surrounded by pine trees, hence the name "des Pins". Very quickly, though, houses were built around it as the city was gaining popularity as a winter resort. Today, residential buildings have replaced many of these houses and Notre Dame des Pins finds itself in a highly urban area with none of the original pine trees that gave it its name.

Located in the old section of Cannes, this chapel is one of the most well known landmarks of Cannes. It sits on top of a hill that overlooks the town and offers the best panoramic views of Cannes. Getting there is simple, just follow the clock tower!

This is the most visible landmark in Cannes and also one of the oldest, the tower is part of Notre Dame de L' Esperance that sits on the top of the hill overlooking the town. Be sure to get some pictures of the one part of Cannes that isn't part of the film festival!

Notre Dame de Bon Voyage was built in 1865 on the site of an older church with the same name. The architect, Laurent Vianay, is also famous for designing many of the luxurious villas and residences of the same period in Cannes. The church is one of the largest in Cannes and is located near the Palais des Festivals, just behind la Croisette. Its claim to fame is that Napoleon passed by its predecessor in 1815 en route from Elba to Paris. A large plaque commemorating the passage can be found on the side of the church (see photo).

Built in the 16th century by the monks of Lérins, Notre-Dame de l'Espérance and its recognisable clock tower have become the symbol of Old Cannes. It is perched on top of the hill of le Suquet, along with Château de la Castre. The interior of the church is simple Gothic, typical of churches in Provence. Open air classical music concerts are held during the summer months just outside the church, at Place de la Castre.

What a view

Looking over Cannes port is the Notre-Dame d' Esperance. This church is in the old part of the city in the du Susquet district. It was built between 1521-1648 in gothic style. It has some impressive art works including busts, altarpieces and two wooden statues(one of the Virgin from the 16th century and one of St.Anne from the late 15th century. One end of the church has a Romanesque chapel which was used years ago as a rufuge. The main thing that catches the eye is a tall square bell tower.
The church is worth seeing and it looks very impressive looking over the port and old part of Cannes. From the church garden and grounds you have a great view of Cannes.I found the views breath taking to say the least.

Church Notre Dame - a lovely little church tucked away on the old town area. Easily recognised by the clock tower and also amazing view around the church.
