typical narrow street by sue_stone The old town in Grasse is great to walk around. There are tiny streets that wind around between old buildings and up and down narrow steps. Some pass through arched tunnels and sometimes open onto large squares with cafes. Leave a Comment Address: Town centreDirections: Start near Fragonard Perfumery

workers at the factory by sue_stone There are over 40 perfumeries in Grasse, but only 3 are open to the public. One of these is Fragonard and it is also the most convenient to visit as it is located in the centre of town. You can do a guided tour through the perfumery, which includes a very interesting talk about the job of a "Nose" (the person who comes up with new blends etc). There is also a small museum on the premises. Leave a Comment Address: 20 Blvd Fragonard, GrassePhone: 04 93 36 44 65Directions: town centreWebsite: www.fragonard.com

Entrance to the world of parfumes by Pavlik_NL Grasse wouldn't be complete without a museum that tells the whole history of parfume. From the fact that parfume started out to be very popular in modern times as a means to make gloves smell nicer in the 16th century. Grasse, having a very important leather industry, immediately embraced this new development, a choice that now seems to have been a very wise one. In the museum one however shows the 3000 years history of parfume. Quite interesting are also the memorabilia, among which the travel-beauty case of Marie-Antoinette. Immediately to your left the museum appears.Website: www.museesdegrasse.com

The old houses sometimes hide special items by Pavlik_NL From Place du Cours one can start a walkthrough the narrow and winding streets and stairs of the "Vieille Ville", the old town. Don;t be surprised when you loose the road once or twice, as this part of Grasse is truely a maze of alleys, paths, cosy little squares and stairways. The medieval spirit waeres around still and the small shops are sometimes selling the strangest things. A walk through old Grasse is a joy for the eyes and ears, as well as for your nose. Flowery and parfum scents are changed by food and fish. A dazzling world of senses. Some places at the border of the old town offer spectacular views over the surroundings hills and landscape. Welded together: oldfashioned cuprum distillation by Pavlik_NL Parfume and Grasse are two words that are almost synonimous to one another. All great parfume brands order here their escence and then give it some (commercially responsible and so nothing actually important) name. Chanel, Sabatini, Dolce & Gabanna ... name it and they just name the product after changing it a little bit. Here however are the large "factories" that produce the real thing. "Usine" they are called and Fragonard and Molinard are the most popular. Besides tours through their laboratories, they also provide in the right season, tours through their flowerfields. Galimard is another famous name in the industry. In any case, follow the huge yellow signs.Website: http://www.fragonard.com/

Tour de Guet, proudly baring French & Grasse flags by Pavlik_NL The skyline of Grasse is dominated by two towers. One is the tower that used to be a part of the bishop's palace, now-a-days the townhall. It is now known as the "Tour de Guet". The large but not that specifically decorated hall is situated directly besides the cathedral. The tower dates back to the 12th century and is made of a red volcanic stone that comes from the "Esterel" mountains near the coast. In the wall a inscription, remembering the poet Bellaud de la Bellaudiere. Leave a Comment Address: Place du Petit PuyDirections: In the medieval town, follow the signs towards the cathedral.

The street that passes both museums by Pavlik_NL Grasse, situated on the border of the Cote d'Azur and the Provence, has two museums that enlighten the customs of this South departement of France in many ways. One museum is the "Musee d'Art et d'Histoire de Provence (1)" showing about the art and history. the other "Musee Provecnal du Costume et du Bijou (2)" emphasises the dresses and jewelry that belongs to this region. Both are situated in the old town of Grasse and are definately worth a visit (one is already great to get an impression). Leave a Comment

Napoleons sister, I think. by NiceLife No doubt the Grasse naval museum is of interest however as the staff didn't appear to make it back from lunch, I was left to study the interesting features of its gardens, one of which is this lifesize marble reclining semi-nude sculpture of Princess Pauline Bonaparte, the Emperor Napoleon's sister. Or maybe it was Napoleon the Third's sister. Anyway, for an emperor's sister, she needs to cover up a little more. This shows all the hallmarks of a celebrity centrefold shoot - in marble. "Fantastic Princess, love, now give us a little more, a little more, thats it, lovely, now hold it there, while I get the hammer and chisel out - this may take a little time." Leave a Comment

Place de Soeurs by NiceLife Medieval origins of Grasse found in the little Square of the Sisters, dating back to 15th century. Reputedly home to Catherine de Medici, the Italian connection following from Grasse being allied for several preceding centuries to Pisa and Genoa. Catherine introduced the fashion of perfumed gloves - designed to help shield high society from the smell of the populace, who, before the invention of the roller-ball underarm deodorant, must have been pretty whiffy . This experience is not for people who get headaches with the faintess odor! It has to be one of the most enjoyable experiences of my trip: to create my own perfume... real perfume! not the simili make-it-yourself stuff bought in cardboard box from Coty! Galimard, one the prestigious perfume makers of Grasse offers perfume making stages of 2 to 3 hours. Spend a morning with the specialist "noses", in their perfume lab, creating your own scent, the way you like it. You will learn about "notes de fond", "notes de coeur" and "notes de tete", their families: floral, amber, oriental, musc, herbacious, etc., the quantities to use of each scent, how to mix them, what makes a great perfume, in what proportions... lots of great secrets revealed to you. Moreover, you get to name your perfume and Galimard keeps its recipy on computer files for you to be able to reorder in the future... what you will be creating is a perfume ready to go when the stage is over, but when you reorder you are free to choose from perfume, bubble bath or body lotion of the scent you've created! The stage itself plus 100ml of your creation is the price of a bottle of perfume sold on the international market. Have fun... and prepare your nose, there's a lot to smell!
