Many ponds are to visit:- "l'olivier" cercled by the town, 2hrs walking (12kms), 30mn bike - "Saint Blaise" protected area very beautiful place to walk and bike, half a day to make...

There are plenty of festivals that occur specifically in the town or in the general provinces. See the link for more information. Spring is the best time to go, flowers are blooming and the main strip of cafes is full of life.

Inside, the decor is in line with very trendy and we note a simple table at the entrance and a direct we been our we like sit dwon. Home side is more than cold (not to mention cold!)

Favorite Dish: we start with an aperitif, cracao. And a fillet of red mullet sauce peppermint. Meat lover, I said emphatically when ordering, cooking bleeding, not blue or point but rare. I said that I prefer that too rare overcooked.

  • Whatever is behind this door.

I saw this door in one of the alleyways in Istres. From the little French I know, I think it says it is open day and night every day of the week. There was also a black kitten that unfortunately ducked back into the hole beneath the doorway before i could get a picture of it coming out. I always wondered what went on in there... If it was some kind...

I took a train from Marseilles to Istres. The conductor said it takes about an hour, but mine took nearly two. It is a slower train that gives great views of both amazing landscapes and polluted industrail towns.

  • Know the language

The people of Istres are extremely friendly, and are very helpful. Unlike most of France's other tourist oriented provinces, not many people know the english language. I remember at one point going into a gas station to get directions to the train station. The two people there didn't know what I was trying to convey in my broken french, but...

  • The old church

Even if I wasn't an infidel, I still think I would have been tired of seeing cathedrals after playing a tourist for such a long time. Still, I really like the old church that sits atop the old town area of Istres. I am not sure of the age of the building, but the bricks on one side are worn so much that it is hard to distinguish the joining point...

  • Wandering around the old town

The older section of Istres is straight out of the eighteenth century, and very well perserved. There are small elements of the centuries following, but nothing that distracts you from the charm of the original architecture.
