Notre-Dame de la Garde, called in Marseille "la Bonne Mère" (our good Lady/Mother) is seen here from the Town hall, on the Northern quay. It represents THE landmark for Marseille as it can be seen from miles away by sailors. Notre-Dame de la Garde is thought to protect the sailors that leave the harbor and sailors are supposed to drop a prayer to her on leaving in order to increase their hope to come back !

On the Notre-Dame de la Garde platform, an amazing cross associates together three symbols: a cross, symbol of Christianity, a heart, symbol of Notre-Dame (Our Lady) and unexpectedly an anchor, reminding that the city of Marseille was born by the sea and has always lived on the sea.

Natre Dame de la Garde, Marseille

This basilica was built during the 1800s, and sits on a hill which gives it a dominating presence over the entire city. The belfry is topped by a golden statue of the Virgin Mary.

We climbed the hill on foot...we had no choice, as it was the day of the general strike. It was worth it, though, given the view and the beautiful interior. Check out some of my other photos!

This landmark church crowns a limestone rock overlooking the southern side of the Vieux-Port, and the whole city of Marseille, for that matter. The Basilica was built in the years 1853 ý 1864 followings the norms of the Romanesque-Byzantine style that was really popular in the 19th century. Its belfry, measuring some 46 meters high, is topped by a 15-meter gilded statue of the Virgin, to whom the edifice is consecrated. Another points worth to note are the lavishly decorated interior (this from Byzantine style, too, I guess), as well as marble and mosaic facings.

Visitors come here not so much for the church as for the view--best seen at sunset--from its terrace. Spread out before you are the city, the islands, and the sea. Admission, like to many other religious monuments throughout France, is free of charge for all.

Apart from the building itself, the Notre Dame de la Garde also offers great views on Marseille and the coast in all 4 directions.

Top of the hill of ND de la Garde

To reach Notre Dame de la Garde, the nicest may is to climb up the Southern side of the hill. You will have great views on the sea, the islands and Marseille.
