    Le Cafe de Turin: Nissart for Seafood

    This is one of the most famous establishments in Nice; it has been in town for over a hundred years and sells Fresh Seafood straight from the market.

    Typically nicois and located under the arcades of the Place Garibaldi, the restaurant is very unfussy and a great place to go with friends or family. It has the best of every day French cuisine, including top quality food and stressed out waiters !

    This is also a meeting place for the few nicois who still speak "Nissart".

    If you like Seafood, you will love the Caf? de Turin !

    Favorite Dish: Oysters and fries !

    Cafe de Turin: Sea food for beginners

    In Finland we eat a lot of fish but very little other "water animals". So, as one of my friend who usually does not eat even much fish promised to try sea food, we chose Cafe de Turin's back room table instead of the rather crowded terrasse (as the room was almost empty at 7pm and we did not want to embarras any other restaurant guests). The restaurant is specialized in sea food and it also sells it to the locals on the street at the Place Garibaldi.

    The service was very friendly, and our waiter also spoke some English. We told the waiter right away that we know nothing about sea food and got good advice for both ordering and eating the strange things. The experience was interesting, and at some points rather hysterical so I'm really glad there weren't many onlookers. However, we got to taste fresh but cooked oysters, mussels, lobster, two different sea snales and others. There was also bread and some mayonnaise for the crevettes on the table, water and white wine.

    Favorite Dish: There were different "try it out" plates. We chose one of those and added separate plates of oysters and mussels. We had our table full. It is also practical as there is something for everybody. E.g. I hated the small black sea snales, but my friend quite liked them. This type of eating takes time so I would not like to do it alone. With good company it is nice to sit around a table and try to get the meat out of the shell... For the locals it was obviously normal to drop in for a plabe of oysters, alone or with a friend.
    We were three persons, had our stomachs full, and the whole thing with 1,5 bottles of good white wine cost us 75 euro.

    Chez Palmyre: Home cooking for over 80 years

    Chez Palmyre has been running in the same place and by the same family for over 80 years. It is rather small, maybe 5 tables for about 20 guests, and it serves only lunch. The restaurant is very simple and the grandma who runs it is very local... (and could not speak English). The place is also rather fully booked. We got in without reservation by chance.
    The lunch consists of an entree (there are choises like Salad Nicoise, or Assiette Anglaise), first (meat dish) and second (vegetable dish) plates, and a dessert, all of which you have three choises. The food is simple home cooking and there is definately no fancy French Cuisine portions, but the ingredients are good and the food is done with love. The portions are not big but you get as much good bread as you want if you feel hungrier, and we were happy. The lunch cost 13 euros + wine and coffee (summer 2008).
    We loved the atmosphere and the simple food and were quite willing to add this restaurant to our list of "places to be visited again".

    Favorite Dish: The food varies each day. The menu is handwritten and in French only - there is one on the door, and an other one for the tables!
    My favourite this time was apricot dessert - perfect taste of ripe apricots which were at their best right then. Next time there will be something else.
