Nice's own "Matisserie", fabulous collection of the masters works. After a couple of hours here you'll be totally "Matissed-out"

In a wonderful setting in Cimiez, amidst an olive grove which is a popular weekend picnic location for Nice families. Paths are named after jazz giants, such as Allee Dizzy Gillespie, as a reminder of the jazz festival held each year .

    Matisse Museum

This completely renovated 17th-century Genoan-style villa in the heart of the olive grove in the Gardens of Cimiez houses the personal collection of the great Fauvist painter who lived in Nice from 1917 until his death in 1954.
Works from all periods of his life offer a comprehensive panorama: from the first paintings made in 1890 to the famous gouache cutouts, 236 drawings, 218 engravings and the complete presentation of the books illustrated by the artist.

If you are a Henry Matisse fan then this is the place for you, and the location is great as well! The museum is located right by the Roman Ruins so you get the best of both worlds when visiting, kind of a two for one deal! From the train station its about a 20 minute walk so most people take a bus or taxi to get there, there is generally not a crowd so its a good place to get away from the madness for a few hours.

I know it is not a sound behaviour to rush into a museum immediately after arrival to a fashionable Mediterranean resort in summer. I, however, did... That was the Matisse Museum.

Matisse spent many years in Nice (can you really blame him??), so the city has a considerable amount of his works. The museum is housed in (as well as below) a 17th-century villa, called Arena Villa, and displays all sorts of the artist's works. You'll see drawings, paintings, bronzes, fabrics, artifacts.

Among things especially worthy of mention are:

-Blue Nude series, among which Blue Nude IV (done in 1952)

-Still Life With Pomegranates (saw that even in my school books)

-Flowers and Fruits (last work Matisse managed to complete before his death)

The Matisse Museum is a 17th century Italian villa with distinctive red walls situated on a hill just above the center of Nice in the heart of an olive grove close to the Hotel Regina where Matisse lived. The park and nearby ruins were part of the ancient Roman City of Cemenelum, now known as Cimiez. Matisse lived in Nice from 1917 to 1954. He donated part of the museum’s collection.

Go to the Matisse Museum. There's also a like 16th century cathedral on the other side of the park at the Matisse Museum which has the most excellent rose gardens in the South of France. Musee de Contemporain (Museum of Modern Art) is fabulous. Excellent rooftop views.
