MAMAC is a wonderful modern art museum, just a block from Place Garibaldi. They have recently benefitted from a donation of over two hundred works directly from the artist Niki de Saint-Phalle. Her collection includes sculptures, paintings, and lots of photographs and letters of her time with Yves Tanguy. Her playful work has found a perfect setting on the French Riviera.
The permanent collection contains some of the most influential artists of the second half of the twentieth century, including Yves Klein, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and local favorite Ben.
The building itself is worth a visit. Small enough to take in everything in an hour or two, and walk up to the roof terrace for a spectacular view of the city. There are ramps and walkways, leading you around the rooftop, with a garden on one side.
i dig modern art and this museum houses a variety of great stuff. a few andy warhol's, robert indiana's, ben vautier, yves klein, and one keith haring!!!!
they also have a few pieces on the roof of the museum and you can walk the full circle of the museum rooftop allowing for FANTASTIC photos! my time on the roof was the best. no one was out there. i could just relax and take in the extraordinary views and the happenings in the arts courtyard.
oh and handy tip: it's closed on monday.
free entrance on 1st and 3rd sunday of every month.
4 euros regular. 2.50 student.
I'm not a big fan of museums and I wasn't impressed by Mamac, however the entrance is free and besides all the art stuff, they also offer clean and free toilets, but also free luggage storage. Apart all that stuff, you have a great view from their roof top.
If you visit the Nice Museum of Modern Art, take the time to visit the roof garden. Gardens do not need to be at ground level to be interesting. The roof garden not only is a lovely garden, it has fabulous views in every direction. On a clear day you can see the surrounding mountains, the lovely bay and all of Nice spread out below you.
On a windy day . . . hold on to your hat!!
One of the things we love about France is the proliferation of modern art. They aren't content to sit on their laurels and enjoy their already-famous works; they delight in displaying new artists in every possible venue. The ones that become icons of the modern movement go into the modern art museums and the one in Nice is particularly well stocked and well displayed.
There is also the lovely roof garden if you need a break from modern art. And outside there is another garden leading down to the administrative offices. There are art works in this garden and no charge to walk there.
Some of the exhibits are interactive so it's great fun for the younger members of your family even if you are not a huge fan of modern art. We've thoroughly enjoyed our visits there and the views from the windows and the roof-top garden are stunning.
Musee d'Art Moderne is the modern art museum in Nice. When I was there a temporary exhibit of giant jackrabbit bronze scuptures was on display. I'll have to look up the artist. I'll have to look up the artist. The side of the museum facing the Acropolis Theater which has some communist and modern sculptures and a big garden area.
