Build between the 10th and 13th centuries on the Puech Rock, this fortified castle that belonged to the archbishops of Arles during the Holy Roman Empire dominates the city. Later in history, it has also been the residence of the Kings of France.
Today it houses one of the most important collection related to French military history in Europe, if not the world. Uniforms, flags, rifles, equipments and harnesses, historical souvenirs, along with 150 wax statues tell the story of the French armies from Louis XIV until the first World War. A great part of the museum is dedicated to Napoleon.
The building itself is remarkable. Have a look at the crenellated towers and the Renaissance courtyard, admire the flamboyant gothic mantelpiece of the Honor Hall, the medieval floors of the gallery and its ceiling with refined, typically French decoration.

Saint-Michel church was build in the 13th century. This church is famous thanks to the remarkable arches of its clock tower, its special gate and its steeple, which was the former clock tower.

One of the monuments I preferred in Salon.
The clocktower was build in 1626 on the spot of an old gate of the city walls. The third level was only added in 1664, and the three bells of the campanile (bell-tower) have been tolling every hour since then.

    Aperitif outside the castle

An enchanting place to celebrate a wedding ! A large alley of trees leads you to the entrance of the castle. The ancient paintings and the majestic staircase gives to this place a special atmosfere. The room in which the wedding dinner was served was also very respectuous of the castle’s past and made the wedding couple feel they were the owners of the manor for a night :-)

The Château de Richebois is a gastronomic restaurant and has also converted two rooms into a discotheque.

Favorite Dish: Of course delicious dinner, with specialties of the South of France, refined French Cuisine and a good selction of wine. And the Crémant …

Good restaurant in the heart of the old Salon. It was so great to sit outside at a nice terrace on that warm July night ! And right at the feet of Nostradamus’statue, enjoying our blackberry and blackcurrant kirs as aperitif…how nice and refreshing !

Favorite Dish: We had a magret de canard sauce foie gras et morilles (fillet of duck with a morel and foie gras sauce). A bit expensive but so delicious, and very refined ! A tasty bottle of wine to go with it, of course…France is the country of wine after all :-) And two Irish coffees before walking to the lit up castle… A great evening !
We paid 64 euros for both of us, it was probably not the cheapest meal, but French Cuisine is so tasty ! And it is part of the pleasures of life :-)

    Happy couple :-)

In spite of the strong Mistral blowing that day on the wedding of our friends, the ceremony held at the church of the Patrouille de France’s air base, was a nice and special one. I had never witnessed a wedding couple surrounded with so many soldiers in uniform :-) Impressive and beautiful…
Our friends both work on the air base and decided to get married there, where they actually met. Of course we needed a special authorization to enter the premises, which made us feel a bit special for a few hours :-)
