We visited Villefranche-sur-Mer by local bus during our visit to Nice in May 2009.

The following details were correct as at that time:

Bus # 100 travels frequently throughout the day from Nice to Villfranche-sur-Mer. From Villefranche-sur-Mer, the bus then carries on to Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Eze-sur-Mer, Monaco and finally, Menton.

Villefranche-sur-Mer is about 15 minutes from Nice and 30 minutes from Monaco.

The bus costs just 1 Euro per person along this route, regardless of whether you are travelling a few hundred metres or all the way from Nice to Menton.

Bus tickets are purchased from the driver on boarding the bus. Sometimes, you’ll receive a paper receipt; other times you’ll receive a card which needs to be validated in a machine next to the driver.

There are several bus stops in Villefranche-sur-Mer; the main one appears to be Octroi. From Octroi bus stop, it is a short downhill walk to the harbour area.

During the day, bus #100 runs approximately every 15 minutes. However, at peak times the buses can become full and may not stop to pick up further passengers. We witnessed this when we were on board a bus from Monaco back to Nice; the driver passed the busy Octroi bus stop without stopping, leaving a crowd of disgruntled people in his wake.

Villefranche-sur-Mer is the 2nd station from Nice's central train station, Nice Ville. Nice has another train station in the suburbs. After leaving that station to reach Villefranche-sur-Mer you will go straight through a tunnel.

Train is best way to reach Villefranche from Nice

    by Flying.Scotsman Written Jan 2, 2010

In May 2009 we purchased 2 reurn train tickets to Villefranche for a total cost of 6€. The bus would have been 4€. The train was a 12 minute journey as opposed to the seeminly endless bus trip through traffic. The only better way would be by foot or bicycle around the coast, but only for the energetic.
