    lake Annecy

I love the towns that are built near lakes, usually the lake itself is the top attraction as you have lots of photo opportunities but also a nice place to walk and relax. The lake of Annecy (le lac d’Annecy) is no exception, a beautiful large lake with clean waters where you can take boat tours or just enjoy lazy walking along the promenade. The backdrop consists of mountains that encircle the lake making the scenery more picturesque, don’t forget that many painters inspired from its scenery probably the most famous is the 1896 painting Le Lac Bleu by Paul Cezanne .

People were just seating there enjoying the view, we didn’t have the privilege of blue sky in winter but we didn’t have hordes of tourists also trying to get a free spot for photographs. In this case you may need to rent a bicycle and check other more peaceful corners of the lake away from the city center. Actually the cycle path that is free of traffic is is very long and covers almost 28 miles. There were lots of families with their kids but also some people with roller blades.

It’s the third largest in France after Lac du Bourget and Lac de Grand-Lieu, it was formed 18,000 years ago when large alpine glaciers melted. It is known as the cleanest/purest lake in Europe with about twenty species of fish in the protected environement. The lake is clean because of strict environmental regulations so no surprise people go there for swimming and other water sports (including scuba diving but also wind surfing!) although even the ducks seem to be freezing in January. I noticed some tour boats so I guess in warmer months people may take advantage of them and tour the lake for an hour or two (there are many different ones, including some that make stops at some little towns, others include meals etc Check around a bit as there are different companies with different prices.
Couples will take their pictures at love bridge of course, pic 5 shows a happy couples at Pont des Amours posing in front of the lake.

Last but not least if you visit Annecy on the first Saturday in August be there in the evening and you’ll will enjoy the biggest firework display in Europe part of Fete du Lac d’Annecy.

While walking around Annecy's old town you will notice flowers everywhere. They really have done a beautiful job of presenting the city nicely. There are flowers all along the canals. If you like flowers and that sort of thing you will be very happy to visit the Gardens of Europe.

To get there just follow the crowds going to lake Annecy. You will end up wandering along the paths and the different exhibitions/expositions they made. It is a large park but a wonderful place to relax. On a clear day you will have a wonderful setting of the mountains in the background and the lake shimmering.

The Lake of Annecy is the second largest lake in France, after lac du Bourget, except for the French part of lac Léman (Lake Geneva).
It is known as "Europe's cleanest lake" because of strict environmental regulations introduced in the 1960s. It is a popular tourist destination known for its swimming and water sports.

The lake was formed about 18,000 years ago at the time the large alpine glaciers. It is fed by many small rivers from the surrounding mountains and from a powerful underwater source, the Boubioz, which enters at 82 m depth.

It's very enjoyable to take a boat ride on the lake. Just walk down to the lake from Thoiu Canal and you will see the boats there with signs telling you when they depart. They also have dinner cruises.

    Lac de Annecy

by Goner Updated Aug 25, 2004

Lake Annecy is a pretty little lake with the magnificient Alps in the background. There are boat excursions available on the lake near the park.

The largest building you see in the distance across the lake is the towers of St. Bernard’s Castle nestled in a vast park. This medieval fortress was converted into a baronial residence for the Menthon family. The direct descendants of this family have occupied the castle since the 11th century and continue to do so today. It sits about 11 kms from the center of Annecy. You can find out more at Annecy’s tourist office.
