Bellegarde borders both the Rhone, and the Valserine lakes, and you can walk along both of them. The Rhone offers more opportunities for boating, and there are benches to sit and enjoy the view, as well as a playground for children. The Valserine is more for hikers, and has a hiking trail running through the forest which can take 3 or 4 hours to hike entirely.

There is only one pub in Bellegarde that is open passed 10pm, and frequented by young people...well, there are quite a few old men, too, but that's to be expected in this town! The bartender is super friendly, and it's a very relaxed atmosphere. There are a couple of pool tables, and a live DJ sometimes, but he comes and goes as he pleases, so you have to be lucky enough to get there on the right day and time. A pitcher of beer costs only 14 euros!
