Champex-Lac is an idyllic spot , just a bit East, over the Franco-Swiss border.
Nicely located at a fabulous lake, this little charming and ultra clean town must certainly seduce everyone. There are lots of walks and hikes in the area and the underground fortress(classified "secret", until 1998) is a must see.
Make sure you take Swiss francs with you!
The euro is mostly accepted, but at what charge!
If you have a car and the weather doesn't allow to ski Annecy is the place you must visit being in Chamonix.
This place is the second Venice with its canal and houses standing in the water. There is the medieval castle (former prison). Pictures of the prison washed by canal from 2 sides are among top 10 of most known European sightseeing photos.
There is a beautiful lake with swans. You can sit on the numerous benches and relax.
And eveything is only in 1 hour drive from Chamonix without the need to cross Montblanc.
Cross the border between France & Switzerland to Le Chatelard - it's just down the road.
Board the Chatelard funicular - the steepest slope funicular in the world with 87% difference in altitude in 700meters, in 12 minutes - in places it's almost vertical!
At the top you're at Chateau d'Eau (but don't expect an impressive fortress!) where you get to see a short film (and for those of you in interested in it or with children... it really is short). Then it's time to board Le Petit Train Panoramique for some absolutely spectacular views and scenery, including views across to Mont Blanc and the Bouqui Canyons, en route to the base of Emosson Dam which is 1931m above sea level. NB The Petit Train is just that - each carriage manages (just) to seat 2 people and if you do not have a head for heights -do not sit on the cliff side. Trust me, you are a very long way up and in many places it is very sheer drop down, not helped when the mist swirls in!
To get to Lake (Dam) Emosson, once you get off The Petit Train you must jump on a the mini-funic and as everything else on this trip - if you fear heights...DON'T LOOK DOWN! The mini-funic goes 140m vertical height in 2 minutes.. you feel as though you are disappearing in to the heavens and wonder how much higher you can go!
Emosson holds a staggering 225million cube meters and, as I mentioned, this is at 1931m above sea level - quite impressive! It's a very lovely sight but, on the day we were there we got to view it for 3 minutes and in that short space of time it went from clear visiblity to very very thick mountain mist.
There is a dinosaur trail which we started on and I should imagine in good weather it would be wonderful. However, the mist was like pea-soup and we couldn't see a thing. Even though we were on a vague track we started to get a bit concerned about finding our way back so we quit whilst we were ahead.
Good comfortable rooms. Breakfast quite good, but is not included in room rate. Has a tea room...more
In fact I should better not make too much publicity for this residence, just to make sure there will...more
