There is so much to see. We started at the lake because it was irresistible. The canal runs through the gardens and the river is on the other side. All of this is bordered by the lake and the mountains. Lac Annecy is supposed to be the cleanest lake in Europe and it is easy to believe this. It is clear and blue and beautiful.

Walk through the gardens, across the Pont des Amours and up the river Thiou into Old Town. Then just wander streets finding interesting things. There are shops and galleries, restaurants, ice cream shops and even a violin shop. Look up because there are statues in niches above doors and windows.

Rest at a cafe and have a glass of wine or a coffee while you watch the people walk past. Finally, wind your way up the hill to the chateau and enjoy the museum and the views from the top.

Annecy in General: Pretty Shocking

The Bull, Garage, Red Zone and Happy People. I live in Annecy and have managed to get in the Happy People by complaining about the noise when they chuck people out as I live about 5 doors away. Sneaked in the Bull one night with a local and have attempted only once to get in the Garage - failed - which is probably a good thing. Been unfortunate enough to have actually entered the Red Zone. Reason for non-entry - complet (lie) or foreign (true). Quote: "would you let foreign people in your clubs" - well yes London clubs would be empty. I have never heard of three girls getting turned away from a club. Hilarious. Out of all of them Happy People is the best.

Fondest memory:
Situated to the south extreme of the lake, it is a havre of 84 ha peace protected since 1974. Two rivers (the Ire and the Dead water) flow there, and his/her/its territory is covered with forests and wild reeds. It is a swamp that absorbed the variations of level of the lake once.

A trail in wood permits to walk to the very cœur of the swamp, between the reeds, during one half-hour of march, until the Tower Beauvivier, vestige of a strong house of the Middle Ages.

The coots, the grèbes huppés, the ducks mallard, the lizards and 3 families of beavers made of the swamp their habitat. Many aquatic birds come to winter there and to reproduce. One can admire the autumn crocus, hops, the seal of Salomon and orchids, there. Harder will be to observe the rare gentian pneumonanthe.

The lake of Annecy

Fondest memory:
Small history of the tourism to the lake of Annecy
The first enthusiastic description of the lake of Annecy appears in " The ode in the Savoie " writes by Jacques Pelletier of the Mans from 1572. (rare copy available to the Library of Annecy).
Many travelers discover the lake before the development of the " tourism ": Henri IV, Louis XIII, Richelieu, Jean - Jacques Rousseau, Eugene Sue,.
But soon the English aristocracy discovers the Alps and Annecy becomes, without having searched for it, a center of holiday for the excursions in mountain and the walks on water:
. In 1839, the first boat is thrown.
. In 1859, 3760 " strangers " frequent Annecy !
. In 1860, the Savoie becomes French, and the suppression of the border brings its flux of visitors, so that the bookstore Hatchet publishes the first " Guide Bleu " dedicated to the Savoie.
All links together then : the big hotels " Luxury hotel " construction, the creation of the tourist office in 1895 (the second of France after Grenoble), the first operations of promotion in England… and in Russia !
The lake is " re-discovered " like place of sporty leisures and either only like a panorama: one inaugurates the Beach in 1935, one creates circles of nautisme and one invents the waterski. Annecy becomes " climatic " station in 1936.
From the years 60, the research of big air, then of pure water, transform the lake of Annecy
in a vast space natural of leisures where all lacustrine activities and highlanders are available.
The tourism today
Today, the " living " types are varied extremely, what makes the tourist wealth of Annecy and the lake, in a very balanced mixture of visitors distributed on all year round.

The water of the lake of Annecy is very pure because the mountains that surround it at the south, to the west and to the East, make a closed lake of it (safe to the north). It is not the case of the Geneva lake and the lake of the Bourget that doesn't benefit from the same natural protection.

The lake of Annecy is a very attractive tourist place, known for its numerous activities : cycling (track for cycles around the lake) - swimming and bathings - waterski, sailboard and oar - parapente and hang-glider - diving under lacustrine - caving (underground cave under the Parmelan).

The lake of Annecy is framed at the East by the massif of the Bornes (the Tournette - 2351 m, the Dents of Lanfon, the Veyrier mount and the mount Baron) and to the west by the massif of the Bauges (the Semnoz and the Rock of the Bœuf), to the north by the agglomerations of Annecy - Annecy le Vieux and to the south by the valley toward Faverges that prolongs the Bout-du-Lac.
