Very early, a pump occupied the place, then a fountain where one had to install the statue of prefect Vaïsse.
The present fountain was decided in 1877. Its realization was confided to architect Gaspard André and sculptor Charles Delaplanche. Under the title "Lyon to those that illustrated" it they raised an imposing monument in the taste of the time. Above fat sirens, a temple surmounted of a small dome shelters the tools of four artists of Lyons, holding their tools : architect Philibert Delorme, engraver Gérard Audran, sculptor Guillaume Coustou and painter Hippolyte Flandrin.

Favorite thing: Fourviere- great view and walk.
Rue Merciere (2e) also bleeds French culture and food much like Vieux Lyon.
The Ferris Wheel ride at Bellecour (jan/feb) provides a gorgeous view of all the terracotta colored rooftops in the city- nice photo op.
Fondest memory: Drinking at the pubs, walking across the Rhone en route to the university, the bread, cheese, wine.

Favorite thing: Lyon is cut by two rivers, the Rhône and the Saône, which for a long urban peninsula, if you can call it that - Presqu' île means "almost an island". There are squares (Place des Terreaux, Place Bellecour), the Hôtel de Ville, the Opera, most of the commerce in Lyon, and the Lyon Perrache train station.

Fondest memory: The Euro 2000 soccer tournament had just started when we arrived in Lyon. I remember watching France vs Czech Republic at the town hall in Lyon and I think France won 2-1. If you have eyes like a hawk you can see Thierry Henry scoring for france :)
Most towns in France showed the games on a big screen at their town halls and it was a great way to meet people and follow the soccer. Susan wasn't a big fan of the footy so I had to think of creative ways of being in the town hall area when the games were being shown and hoping she'd take the hint!

Favorite thing: Would be glad if anyone from Lyon told me what this is. An impressive building in the Presqu'île, I liked it and took a picture, but haven't got a clue on what it is :(
