Lyon IS the french gastronomic city ! There are so many excellent restaurants that you need many months to get somme good addresses. Lyon is well known for the 'bouchon', a small restaurant where food is family kind, simple and the ambiance is warm. You talk, you eat good food and you drink good wine from 'beaujolais' in the north or 'cotes du rhone' in the south. Be careful ! there are a lot of touristic restaurant which display 'bouchon' in front but are not real ones !! bouchon are mainly in the center, not in the old town despite it's really a kind place. there is a label 'authentique bouchon lyonnais' for real 'bouchons'. In the old town, there is only one which is dubbed as 'les 3 maries'. Try to have a look at http://www.vivrelyon.com/index5.php (in french) and http://www.accessatlanta.com/ajc/travel/content/0217lyon.html (in english)
wherever you go in Lyon, try to have a look around the Saint-George church. It's still in the old town, but not as frequented as around Saint-Jean. And you'll find some pubs and bars with really cool ambiance, not too expensive. You must try to go to the '110 vins', a great wine bar where you can eat some cheese or other things with your wine. They can also suggest you what you may like to drink.
About price, you can think about 20 to 25 euros for a complete meal and wine.
Favorite Dish: Lyon has a lot of great specialties ! if you're a foreigner, probably many of them won't make you willing to taste them but please, open up your mind (and your mouth !). It's special but it's great !! and take a 'pot de cote' to drink with. the 'pot' is a small bottle from Lyon. We use to say 'pot de cote' abaout a 'pot' which contain wine 'cotes du rhone village', probably the most drunk wine at Lyon.
And you must try to eat some 'quenelles' with 'gateaux de foies de volaille', or a 'tablier de sapeur' (I love it), the famous 'saladier lyonnais' (with salad, lardons and egg mainly), for cheese please take a 'saint marcellin' and you may finish with a lemon tart or 'pralines' tart.

Please try at least once 'Aux Trois Maries', little bit expensive, but delightful... (40-50 € per person aprox.)
Medium budget will encounter wonderful menus in any restaurant in 'Place Saint Jean' besides nice atmosphere in summer.
Favorite Dish: Desserts are wonderful in Lyon, don´t forget to taste such sweet 'fromage blanc avec la creme'.

My favorite restaurant has to be 'le chant de laure' you'll have to ask me where it is, it's easy to get there but its a small place where you can eat crepes...a typically french meal. But if you want luxuriuos french food (yes food is luxurious in france) you have the very famous 'bocuse' restaurant its known all over france. There's also 'leon de lyon' where the presidents went during the G7 meeting
nice price=)
Favorite Dish: crepes!!!with anything you want in them from bacon to chocolate

Address: in the middle of the city
You'll notice that the guide will tell you to go to Rue Mercière for fine dining, which is true. However, there are many other good ones around town. Another one I really enjoyed is LES ADRETS.
The service was great, the food superb, the ambiance cozy.
Favorite Dish: Everything I tried was wonderful to the palate. They have three fixed menus. I chose the middle price range (appr. US$40) but all dishes are creatively prepared. The magnificent 4 course meal include entrée, aperitif, main course, cheese & bread and dessert . (Drinks not included) The additional bargain is you don't have to tip but you are certainly welcome to do so.

Remember, Lyon is a gastronomic city, so indulge! You can get really, really good food for a reasonable price. I certainly didn't try every restaurant nor can I recommend all those I have but these are the ones where I have had wonderful eating experience. You'll also notice most restaurants in Lyon are quite small- called 'bouchon' The picture below is not the restaurant I am recommending below but it gives you an idea of what one might look like.
Try CHEZ MOUNIER. Excellent restaurant! They serve traditional Lyonnais cuisine. Their ambiance is not five-star but the food compensates for it. This restaurant is very popular among the locals. We went there on a weeknight and was still turned away because it was packed!
Favorite Dish: Try their andouilettes (sausages of cow's intestines) and queunelles.

This was the only restaurant we went to and it was the most interesting! The waiter was extremely entertaining to say the least - 'mother's milk!' he cried, holding a wine bottle up to his mouth (after he came back from the alley way across the road - mmmm....) Then he would draw kangaroos on my friend's serviette and write down the dessert menu in about 4 different languages, and nearly fall through the glass window whilst taking a photo of our group! The food was absolutely DELICIOUS though. Pity I can't remember the name but just look for the lady spreuker out the front wearing a red boa...

Le Comptoir des Caraïbes (French Caribbean food)
There is a very good atmosphere in this restaurant at a very good price. You can eat for about 150-200 French Francs (25-33 $) per person, drinks included. The owner is very friendly and there is a very nice boat decoration. Furthermore, the food is very tasty.
Favorite Dish: The starter called: assortiment de 5 entrées. You have a sample of 5 different starters: marinated salmon, spicy bloodpudding, cod 'accras', féroce d'avocat (a dish that mixes avocado and cod, very tasty and surpising) and a pepper dish.
