Enthroned on the hill's summit is the 19th-century Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière. Rising fortresslike with four octagonal towers and crenellated walls.
Its interior is covered with colored mosaics, and an ancient chapel adjoins the church. A gilded statue of the Virgin surmounts the belfry.
It looks down on Lyon day and night a great sight on the hill
This beautiful church sits at the top of the Fourvière Hill. It was built in the 19th century, which makes it pretty modern among French churches.
This church is often called the upside-down elephant 'coz of its 4 octagonal towers.
You can either walk up there or take the funicular which goes from Vieux Lyon.
This photo was taken from downtown Lyon.
Yes, it is an impressing building, built on the best place in town in order to become a landmark. From an art historians point of view, it doesn't mean much - sorry.
Always keep in mind, that this church was built in the 19th century - technology was much more advanced by then. The church is all "neo": neobyzantine - which means: nothing new.
Take the funicular up to the top...
This is one of the most beautiful churches in the world. I've seen Notre Dame and La Chapelle in Paris, Westminster Abbey, St. Patrick's in Dublin, and they are certainly beautiful but... This is breathtaking inside and out!
Constructed between 1872 and 1896 in an eclectic style (austere on the outside and very richly decorated inside). The Basilica offers a wealth of mosaics, stained glass windows and marbles.
You can admire the panoramic view from all along the esplanade.
Situated at the top of the Fourvière Hill overlooking the city and its environs, the site on which the Basilica stands today has always been a place of worship. It was built in 1870 at the request of the women of Lyon, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
The interior of the basilica of Notre-Dame is no less impressive and luxurious than the exterior one sees. In fact, if possible, it’s even more so. So, if you had any doubts that Lyon was a prosperous city, the mere sight of the interior of the basilica should get you ride of them forever:))) Why? Not for nothing! Simply because from floor to ceiling, you can find gilded decorations everywhere in this basilica. Yes, folks, pure gold! One of the most lavishly decorated churches I ever saw, too.
It somewhat reminded me of my homeland – Russia. A lot of gold, too, and paintings. Of all Russian churches, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow comes in mind as the closest comparison.
Towering over Lyon, visible from most anywhere in the city, the Basilique was built between 1782 and 1896.
It's possible to climb the towers, Wed-Sun from April to September, and on weekends the rest of the year.
The Basilica of Fourviere is perched on a hill above the old town. The best way to get up there is take take the Funicular railway from teh Vieux Lyon metro station. The view from the top is fantastic, you can then walk bck down to the old town through the gardens (about 20 minute walk, all downhill!)
Below is the BASILIQUE NOTRE DAME DE FOURVIERE. (This is the one perched on the hill.) The basilica was built in the 19th century - rather young compared to others in France. Be sure to check out its colorful mosaics.
The Basilica was built between 1872-96 at the top of the Fourviere Hill next to the Tour metallique. It has a Byzantine style with good mosaics. Our view is from the east side.
Climb the stairs or take the small 'train' to this beautiful white church. From there you can also admire the view of the city.
Build in the 19th century on top of the hill, the basilica is not only a very impressive building but it also offers a great view on the city of Lyon.
The interior of this church has to be one of the most beautiful in the world. Unfortunately, most of the photos didn't come out.
