Take a hike up the steep streets and walkways lined with distinctly tall, colorful and red-roofed buildings. Or you can cheat and take the metro to the Croix Rousse station. Either way, you?ll be rewarded with a nice view of Fourviere Hill to the south.
The tall, austere houses which are such a feature of the Croix-Rousse are the direct result of the popularisation of the Jacquard weaving loom, necessitating high roofs, in the early years of the 19th century. This was the stronghold of the canuts or silkworkers.
