Bridge Over the Saone (1)

Two rivers run through the city but the west one, the Saone, flows into the Rhone at the south end of Lyon. The tourist is more attracted to the Saone because its west bank rises at first gradually and then as an abrupt hill called the Fourviere at whose top is a 19C Basilica and a modest sized Eifel Tower and because it holds the Old Town. The city also spreads out to the north on a plateau area called the Croix Rousse where silk weaving still occurs. We never went to the edge of the Rhone in the several days we were there. Thus our pictures are only of the Saone and two of its bridges and the Passerelle du Palais de Justice, a walking bridge.

Lyon has two rivers running through the city. If you have a free afternoon, walking along the river is a wonderful way to relax and spend a few hours. Another great way to enjoy the river and its views, is taking a dinner cruise. The food and wine were fantastic, and the views of the city from the river were beautiful as the city was lighting up in the evening.

Rhone River

Lyon is blessed with 2 lovely rivers running through it the Rhône and the Saône.

One of my recommendations is having a walk next to the river, and see the beautiful buildings around you, and stopping off at one of the many cafes for a beverage.

Lyon's Markets

The markets, held most mornings by the river, are really worth a browse. After spending 6 weeks in France, I can honestly say that the eclairs sold at these markets are the very best I'd tried...and I'd tried quite a few :-) Find them at the stand selling all things sweet.

Plenty of fresh produce is on sale and you may just feel like some fresh fruit after all that delicious but heavy Lyonnaise cuisine!

I thought we were just going to get postcards for my 4 friends who don't yet have e-mail access. However, Luc decided to play tour guide. I had already taken the 50¢ tour of the city 11 years earlier. He wanted me to go to the opera house and revisit the cathedral. I DUG IN LIKE AN ALABAMA TICK (I stubbornly refused) because opera sounds like a banshee in a bear trap and, I thought at that time (almost a year before joining VT) if you've seen one European cathedral, you've seen the lot. I would rather have been stranded in Teheran without my traveler's cheques than to go to either one or both of those places. We crossed the Sâone River on the foot bridge and walked around the shopping district for awhile.

There's two daily cruise along the historical sides along the river with guide narrating in English/German and French. I wasn't aware that Lyon is such a cultural rich city... I end up stay two more days there exploring it and it really worths it.
