Mountain tops
Snow tops could be seen at the distance. Nevertheless I enjoyed mountain landscapes after monotony of beach impressions from Nice and Cannes. You can watch my 3 min 08 sec Video Nice-Lion across the Alps out of my Youtube channel.

Though mountains are not very high, but the road passes through picturesque gorges so the river running below left sometimes on tens meters in a precipice. We have been told, that Napoleon lead in due time the army on this road, having caused a panic at Italians and Austrians who thought, that the army would go seacoast. However the march-throw on the shortest way through mountains brought military success to Napoleon.
We were already a little tired of mountain road when we have been arranged a green parking near picturesque lake. I don't know the name of this lake. Jean-Louis (JLBG) helped me and suggested the following."Lac du Sautet, near Corps, perhaps. The three lakes of Laffrey (lac de Petichet, lac de Laffrey, lac Pierre-Chatel)are unlikely." Thanks Jean-Louis!Surrounded by green mountains, the lake had a very cut up and steep coast. I have taken advantage of the moment, and have quickly left from our group in a deserted place. Here I dived into the water. In spite of the fact that it was a mountain lake, water was warm enough. I have already a little weaned from bathing in fresh water, but felt huge pleasure.
Along the road which winds up to the popular ski resorts of Tignes & Val d Isere is a large lake & dam. This was built between 1947 and 1955 to produce hydroelectric power. The village of Tignes le lac was abandoned & submerged in the waters, every 10 years the lake is emptied for maintence & you can still see houses & a few cars. This is draws many people to the area to see the unusual sight & even a religous service is held on the lake bed. The next emptying is due in March 2010.The web page below has some great old photos of how the valley was before the lake & as it is now.
La Fornet is a tiny village just east of Val d Isere, in the Savoy, close to the Italian border. There is nothing very special to see here just lots of peace & quiet surrounded by the snowy mountains. Due to an foot injury from my parachute jump I needed a day break from skiing near the end of the holiday, so I walked from La Daille up to here instead. It looks a very dull day in the photo but I remember it as actually a lovely sunny walk!
Or from Sallanches to Albertville, every side are marvellous! To precise its location, this is a road between Savoie (73) and Haute-Savoie (74). It goes through Megeve (just click to find pictures on that lovely village). If you take this road you have to like to drive in the mountain, you will find a wonderful landscape but also incredibles hair-pin curves! You will take the "Gorges de l'Arly" (just click to see my album about it), unless this part of the road is close (which happens often..), therefore you will be redirected through Hery sur Ugine. Enjoy!
