Next door to the three star Michelin rated Troisgros is a bistro, le Central, which allows we mere mortals to experience some of the aura surrounding the Troisgros phenomena without the astronomical prices (our bill came to €82). One main course at Troisgros could set you back that much.
Le Central is set up a bit like a grocery store with the walls of the room displaying many local and imported high quality gourmet products.
We went for dinner at night and selected dishes from a la carte. The menu was €27 at night (€24 at lunch).
After cocktails to start, Madam chose Rissoto aux cepes, €13; followed by Cuttlefish dumpling soufflé with shellfishes cream, €18. He had Anchovies and sweet pepper marinated in oil, €13; followed by Boeuf Charolais (piece of rump)€22.
We chose to drink local wine by the glass (cote Roannaise red) €4.
The service was attentive without being over bearing and the ambience warm and friendly with several table of large families or work groups celebrating the end of the working week perhaps.
Table ware and linen a cut above average.
    Closed Sunday and Monday.

Favorite Dish: As usual I compared the steak with what I'm used to back in Oz. Le Central's chef, Frédéric Garrivier's Charolais Rump was superb. One of the best steak meals I've had in France. Overall, we rated the restaurant "very good : worth a return visit".

note: the "comparison" rated "about average" below is an answer to a question "Is it expensive or cheap compared to other restaurants in Villié-Morgon?" In no way does it refer to other aspects of the restaurant.

Hotel des Lys is a Logis de France listed establishment in the "high street" across the bridge in the centre of Roanne. During our 2008 road/canal trip, we rated eight of the restaurants we tried as memorable. This was one of them.
The choice of menus at dinner were: Menu Lyonnais 15 €; Menu 18 €; Menu 25 €.
Could not resist the Cocktail du Maison to start. We opted for the €18 Menu which is three course choice of 2 dishes each course. We had every choice and shared the dishes.
They consisted of: Croustillant de chevre; Mousseline de poisson; Faux-filet sauce Oporto; Filet de Tacaud; fromage blanc a la creme; Assiette gourmande
We drank white wine by the glass from an extensive wine list.
The €25 menu was four courses and looked to be very good value. I'll try that next visit.
We could not fault the service. Ambience was great with people staying in the hotel and several pairs of local residents all enjoying their meals and interacting with the staff.
Linen and table-ware were first class.

Favorite Dish: We enjoyed every course. I have tried beef in French restaurants over the years and upon comparison with typical Australian steak meals it is usually found wanting. Not so at the Restaurant des Lys. Perfection.
We don't usually have dessert and often forgo the opportunity even if it's included in a menu. One look at the Assiette gourmande and I was sold! It looked wonderful with taste sensations to match. Too good to miss!
