Minatec came into existence at the instigation of CEA-Leti Grenoble and INP Grenoble. Its ambition is to be Europe's top centre for innovation and expertise in micro and nanotechnology. Minatec is located in Crolles, 20 km north to Grenoble.
The following has been borough to the Minatec web site
Several initiatives are taking shape in various parts of the world, in response to the challenge of extreme miniaturization, but only a few major international centers have the potential to succeed in what is an industrial revolution. Minatec has this potential:
> An integrated approach to innovation
Minatec adopts an integrated approach to innovation, from the exploration of technological breakthroughs to immediate industrial applications. This is essential to succeed the transition from advanced microelectronics to nanotechnology.
> A high concentration of skills and resources
Ultimately, 3,500 engineers, researchers and academics will be working at Minatec.
> A strategy of international alliances and partnerships
This concentration of skills flourishes in an open environment that attracts international scientists and technologists.
> An ambitious policy of ongoing investment
€ 150m will be invested in Minatec between 2002 and 2005, in addition to € 250m invested by CEA-Léti and INP Grenoble. During the last 10 years, the microelectronics industry has invested € 4bn in the Grenoble area.
> A talent pool dedicated to science and advanced technology
Grenoble has the necessary scientific, technological and industrial resources to give Minatec an environment that corresponds its ambitions:
17,000 jobs in scientific and academic research
220 laboratories and 5 international research centers
10 engineering schools
A powerful local microelectronics industry, (13,350 workers, including 3,000 in research), 30 international corporations, 20 high-potential startups launched in the last 5 years
Decisive support of local authorities
The CEA is a public research center and a major player in research, development and innovation, the CEA intervenes in three main fields: energy, information and health technologies and Defense. The CEA Grenoble, formerly called CENG (Centre d'Études Nucléaires de Grenoble) is one of the half a dozen research center it has throughout France. It was the first research facility built on the Polygon of Grenoble.

ESRF stands for European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
The ESRF is on the "Polygone" research center, at the confluent of the Isère and of the Drac rivers.
The following two paragraphs have been borough to the ESRF web site.
The ESRF is a joint facility supported and shared by 18 European countries.
The ESRF operates the most powerful synchrotron radiation source in Europe. Each year several thousand researchers travel to Grenoble where they work in a first-class scientific environment to conduct exciting experiments at the cutting edge of modern science.
At the ESRF, physicists work side by side with chemists and materials scientists. Biologists, medical doctors, meteorologists, geophysicists and archaeologists have become regular users. Industrial applications are also growing, notably in the fields of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, petrochemicals and microelectronics..

Favorite thing: Inria stands for "Institut National de Recherches en Informatique et en Automatique" (National Institute for Research in Informatics and automoatics). If you want to know more on this high tech institute go to the Inria web site. It is not on the Campus but in the neighboring city of Montbonnot. I feel that the style of their main building is a marvel.
INSTITUT NATIONAL POLYTECHNIQUE DE GRENOBLE (INPG)
The INPG federates 11 "écoles d'ingénieurs" and most of the system of the "Grandes écoles".
The INPG registers every year more than 5,000 students. It pays a very special attention to its links with industry and to its international involvement. With 1,100 new engineers graduating each year, it ranks first in France for graduation of engineers.
ENSEEG : matériaux, électrochimie, génie des procédés
ENSERG : électronique et technologie de l'information.
ENSGI : génie industriel
ENSIEG : énergie et génie électrique
ENSHMG : fluides, mécanique et environnement
ENSIMAG : informatique et mathématiques appliquées
ENSPG : physique appliquée et génie nucléaire
ESISAR : Systèmes industriels embarqués
EFPG : industries papetières et graphique

UNIVERSITÉ STENDHAL (Grenoble 3) Lettres, langues et communication.
10,000 students are registered each year in Université Stendhal. Eighteen languages are taught in Stendhal university (German, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, English, Spanish, Dutch, Rumanian, Arab, Modern Greek, Portughese, Serbo-Croat, Catalan, Italian, Polish, Czech).
UNIVERSITÉ PIERRE MENDÈS FRANCE (Grenoble 2), Sciences sociales (droit, économie, sociologie, histoire etc.)
Pierre Mendès France University (UPMF) registers every year 19,000 students. In order to better prepare it’s students to insert themselves in the Society, UPMF is widely open to international.
UNIVERSITÉ JOSEPH FOURIER (Grenoble 1), Sciences, Technologie, Médecine
Université Joseph Fourier (UJF) in Sciences, Technology and Health, is an internationally recognized leading university. It teaches each year more than 18,000 students among which many foreign students. Owing to the presence in or not far from Grenoble of numerous international research facilities, the research potential of the Grenoble region is ranked in France second to the Paris region. Many international groups in informatics, metallurgy, electrical engineering have rooted research centers in Grenoble because of the exchanges they can have with the University’s research laboratories.
Favorite thing: Grenoble Universités is a structure that federates the 4 Universities of Grenoble. University of Grenoble is among the oldest in the country, founded in 1339. In the following tips, I will present the four Universities that belong to "Grenoble Universités".
